Man, I must have inherited a gene that makes me a glutton for punishment in the automotive department....
Yes, I have owned: 1974 Chevrolet Vega (fill the oil, check the gas) 1976 Pinto (um, it was really cheap, had a sunroof, and I got it for $100) 1986 Fiero (rear engine car in snow.... no fun) but the worst car for me was... 1997 Pontiac Montana minivan. When it was running, it was smooth and comfortable ride, and could fit a buttload of stuff into it. But when it complained, it cost me a pile of cash to keep it going. I think I put my mechanic's kid through college with that thing. When the second engine blew up, I kicked the snot out of the thing (I broke the headlights, taillights, and almost broke all the windows before the junk guy got here to take it away). I drove a Ford Fiesta this weekend.... a rental... it rode nice enough on the highway, but it looked like it was run hard and put away wet. For a car with 14k miles on it, it looked like it was 12 years old with 140k.... I guess that's what Enterprise gives you when you get the $9.99 weekend special. |

Re: Pinto!
trotter, your comment had me look at Paladin's picture again... so many questions!
Why a sportcoat? Why do you have a rifle? Is a $10 tent a good investment? Can the Pinto go fast enough to need auxiliary lighting? Is the alternator large enough to run the CB and lights at the same time? Thank you for sharing that photo! |

Not a rifle -- was a side-by-side hammered .410 bore shotgun. Excellent defense. A $10 tent is very good if it starts raining while you are asleep. As I said, the Pinto could cruise 70 mph up the Grapevine (6% grade) in top gear. On another trip I went up either Sonora Pass or Tioga pass, at night, doing 60-70 mph and not outrunning my lights. Catching someone, kill the pencils, get closer and kill the wide and highbeams, as I pass he would kill his highbeams, I would hit my highs, fogs, and pencils -- far more light. Maybe 500 watts of light, 35 amps.... check Google... yeah, the Pinto had a 65 amp alternator. No problem! Pintos were great cars. |

Was looking at that original video and then ran across this thing on Jason's Youtube channel. It's a 1965 Peel Trident. Another addition to worst cars.
What I found interesting was his statement that it was built with a 12 HP Vespa drive train. Really?

It, and the sedan version, were the first Honda cars imported to the US, and predated the Civic. FWD 600cc air-cooled twin and 10" wheels. It was a very good little car and a lot of fun... until it got punted by a Pontiac:

Yeah, I've always had a soft spot for Nash/Rambler/AMC. I've always wanted a Nash Metropolitan, I had a great time on a cross country ride in a Rambler American, the one with the front seats that folded flat and turned the inside of the car into a queen sized bed, and in the muscle-car era I liked the Marlin best. What can I say? There's no accounting for taste.

1980 Fiat Strada. I bought it new, 3 mos later the dealer went out of business. Within a year it began to rust, so much that the rear doors would not stay closed as the attachment points rusted off.. I had to rope the rear doors together to keep them closed. It handled fairly well, but little things started falling apart right away. The air conditioning never worked right and it had trouble starting in cold weather. Traded it in as soon as I could afford to.

By 1976 GM had lost all control of quality. There were too many things wrong with the car to enumerate. The worst was the odd firing V6 that I ended up having to change the timing-chain on it three times before I sold it with 80,000 miles on it. Havent owned a GM vehicle since.
