That brings back memories. The Prinz 4 was a neat little car. A friend's family owned many NSUs and I drove all the models. IIRC some were two cylinders.
Yes, two cylinder air cooled engine in the rear. My friend has access to one through his family when we were in High School in the early 60's. One memorable day, it broke it's motor mounts and the entire engine flipped up side down. It was replaced with a VW.
Now that is funny. I have a perfect mental picture of the engine flip.

Tires wore out, got the cheapest tires I could find figuring it would be dead before the tire wore out. Almost didn't. But three months after letting both oil and water low I lost an intake valve on the way to work. Was firing up the intake the car didn't run at all well, but made it to work. Managed to get it started after work and drove it home. Figured out which was the bad cylinder, ripped the spark wire which gave me enough power to go 20 mph. Drove it to/from work for a month, finally drove it to Pick-Your-Parts which gave me $110.

Hey Paladin,

Love that photo - LOL- You look like you're expecting someone, like maybe a gang of the walking dead, to come over the hill and try to steal your Pinto.

The 1600 Kent engine is the power plant for Formula Ford and the 2000l German engine is Formula Ford 2000 (Formula Continental) here in the US.

This is my 150HP 2l about to go into the racecar:

Man, I must have inherited a gene that makes me a glutton for punishment in the automotive department....

Yes, I have owned:
1974 Chevrolet Vega (fill the oil, check the gas)
1976 Pinto (um, it was really cheap, had a sunroof, and I got it for $100)
1986 Fiero (rear engine car in snow.... no fun)

but the worst car for me was... 1997 Pontiac Montana minivan. When it was running, it was smooth and comfortable ride, and could fit a buttload of stuff into it. But when it complained, it cost me a pile of cash to keep it going. I think I put my mechanic's kid through college with that thing. When the second engine blew up, I kicked the snot out of the thing (I broke the headlights, taillights, and almost broke all the windows before the junk guy got here to take it away).

I drove a Ford Fiesta this weekend.... a rental... it rode nice enough on the highway, but it looked like it was run hard and put away wet. For a car with 14k miles on it, it looked like it was 12 years old with 140k.... I guess that's what Enterprise gives you when you get the $9.99 weekend special.

trotter, your comment had me look at Paladin's picture again... so many questions!

Why a sportcoat? Why do you have a rifle? Is a $10 tent a good investment? Can the Pinto go fast enough to need auxiliary lighting? Is the alternator large enough to run the CB and lights at the same time?

Thank you for sharing that photo!

Have slept in the car back seats fold flat ... but was about five feet and my five foot nine couldn't stretch out. That shot was California coast, just went a little way up a lumbering road. We could do that back in the '70's. I have a similar small tent for touring on the scooter.

Sportcoat -- I'm part English, for two years I was in Slade Green Secondary School, in Kent, England. That coat was Harris Tweed.

Not a rifle -- was a side-by-side hammered .410 bore shotgun. Excellent defense.

A $10 tent is very good if it starts raining while you are asleep.

As I said, the Pinto could cruise 70 mph up the Grapevine (6% grade) in top gear. On another trip I went up either Sonora Pass or Tioga pass, at night, doing 60-70 mph and not outrunning my lights. Catching someone, kill the pencils, get closer and kill the wide and highbeams, as I pass he would kill his highbeams, I would hit my highs, fogs, and pencils -- far more light. Maybe 500 watts of light, 35 amps.... check Google... yeah, the Pinto had a 65 amp alternator. No problem!

Pintos were great cars.

The only thing that was cool about a Pacer is that you could put curtains up in the back and the gals thought they were in a room.

Room service? Oh yeah.

Was looking at that original video and then ran across this thing on Jason's Youtube channel. It's a 1965 Peel Trident. Another addition to worst cars.

What I found interesting was his statement that it was built with a 12 HP Vespa drive train. Really?

I remember the Subaru 360 (ccs). There was one bombing around my small hometown in western PA in the late '60s.

It probably inspired me to buy the Honda 600 sport coupe I got in '71 (I think). It, and the sedan version, were the first Honda cars imported to the US, and predated the Civic. FWD 600cc air-cooled twin and 10" wheels. It was a very good little car and a lot of fun... until it got punted by a Pontiac:

I had two Pintos back in the day. It seems everyone in our neighborhood had at least one Pinto in their family over the ten years they made them. I had two 1975's, one I bought and the other handed down from my sister when she moved west. They were fun cars for that time. Of course they rusted a bit and a had a hard time going past 75 mph but they were fun. I had a buddy that had a '73 wagon with the 2 liter and a four speed. It was like a model T- it could go anywhere- no need for an suv. Both of mine had the gas tank recall done so I felt safe. My brother slid backwards into a bridge and totaled his '73 and thankfully did not blow up. Memories...

But a GREMLIN? I mean even the name tells you no, no, no.

Yeah, I've always had a soft spot for Nash/Rambler/AMC. I've always wanted a Nash Metropolitan, I had a great time on a cross country ride in a Rambler American, the one with the front seats that folded flat and turned the inside of the car into a queen sized bed, and in the muscle-car era I liked the Marlin best. What can I say? There's no accounting for taste.

Sold for a '77 GMC K2500.

Wife came with a '75 POS Pinto that her brother sold to her $300 after he had a collision in it. Passed SMOG. Two years, without any maintenance other that checking water and changing oil if we remembered, passed SMOG.

Pintos were great cars.
+1. My first car was a 73 Pinto 1.6. it was a package deal along with a 78 rusted out Subaru station wagon. Both for $100 and in need of clutches and a tranny in the Pinto. They were both superb cars after the repairs and I them miss greatly. I washed dishes for 8 months to be able to afford to get them on the road. I was proud of them as my cousins had new cars bought for them by their parents. It was blood sweat tears and beers that got me on the road.

I'm not sure what it is, but the longer I stare at this photo, the louder and louder and even louder the banjo music gets.

Almost bought a Sonett once - was a later model than yours. Really cool car. Wound up with one of these instead ('75 Volvo 164E)

but I ultimately went back in the other direction with a SAAB 900S because that Volvo was 1) awful in the snow and 2) ate gasoline like candy

Actually VW did the same thing in some of the 411/412 series - the last of their air-cooled cars. The bug heater was famous for being almost non-functional, so these upscale VWs had a gasoline powered heater that could even be turned on with a timer to "prewarm" the car. Sounded good, but I owned one. They sooted up every few months and had to be cleaned at the shop. The system was more trouble than it was worth.

1980 Fiat Strada. I bought it new, 3 mos later the dealer went out of business. Within a year it began to rust, so much that the rear doors would not stay closed as the attachment points rusted off.. I had to rope the rear doors together to keep them closed. It handled fairly well, but little things started falling apart right away. The air conditioning never worked right and it had trouble starting in cold weather. Traded it in as soon as I could afford to.

1976 Buick Century V6
By 1976 GM had lost all control of quality. There were too many things wrong with the car to enumerate. The worst was the odd firing V6 that I ended up having to change the timing-chain on it three times before I sold it with 80,000 miles on it. Havent owned a GM vehicle since.
