I want to thank all of you for your support and friendship. I was, and remain truly touched. There is both a physical and psychological shock after an accident and I was immersed in remorse on every level. Yours words of encouragement lifted my spirits and helped me see past the moment.
No, I'm not going anywhere and will remain active on MV - as one MV friend noted - we cover a lot more than scooters here. So, I will continue posting pictures of the BV 350 that I never owned and making my typical observations and attempts at humor. I've told members of the Scooter Battalion in Houston that I'll still show up for the rides - but will now drive the sag wagon. Oh by the way - I bought a new scooter already and attach a picture. Once again, thanks and my love to y'all. ![]()

Maybe there's a way you can get a trike or throw a tow-pack on a 150. Heal well my friend. Pain meds are your friend. If you can get them to write you for some lidocaine patches. Their helping the pain from where my shoulder hit the curb and my broken ribs. Slapped a few on places I wholly agree with you - life is filled with risks and scooters just add just a touch more risk. I still engage in a lot of other risky businesses and I've chosen to eliminate the most common source of more serious injuries. I wish I enjoyed the pain medicines more but they tend to make me a little sick to my stomach. I miss my Jack Daniels but I'm sure it's not on my medical regime. I intend to put an MV and "Sons of Belial" sticker on it. I've got a sheepskin cover for the knee saddle on order. When I pass people who know me well while I am riding it they will not likely take a second look and will shake their heads in the usual and customary fashion. ⚠️ Last edited by Oldscoot on UTC; edited 1 time

Oldscoot, the wisdom you've brought to this forum is indespencible, the knowledge has been vast. They let 'non-Vespa' riders (me) hang out here, riders like you are irreplaceable. (Even if you do/did decide to classify yourself as a 'former' rider.)

I know it's coming for me also. I hope you heal quickly and well. |

Sorry to hear of your bad fortune. I am a year older than you and understand the questions concerning the ability to carry on in the future as we have done in the past. Two years ago I decided I was getting too old to ride so I sold my motorcycle and convinced myself that I wouldn't miss riding. Two months ago I gave in to the urge to ride again and bought a used Vespa. I'm enjoying riding as much as ever, but I understand the potential dangers. I just try to ride within my own limitations and hope I don't have a bad encounter with a negligent driver. I respect your decision to step off the scooter, but I would advise you not to sell it just yet. After you have ridden as long as we have, it's hard to walk away.

George,
What can I say? I respect you holding true to your commitment, but sure hate to think that you won't be out there riding with us. You were certainly instrumental in me deciding to get my new 2016 Super Sport. I love everything about that scooter, just has you had told me I would. I was certainly shocked when Chuck got off the phone and told me that yo took a spill and possibly had broken your leg. I understand what you are going through, as I had fractures in almost the exact locations as yours. Except I started at 16,000 feet to get my broken leg and ankle. And much like your decision, I won't skydive again! So I took up scooter riding! But seriously, buddy, I hope you heal quickly and ready to take on any endeavours that you decide to take up, even if it is macrameing. Hope to see you at one of our next functions, your first drink is on me! Just a couple of cycle pics from our Houston Mods vs. Rockers event this past weekend: ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]()

Wishing you both, Oldscoot and Judy, speedy recoveries. Having accidents in later years seems much different than when we were younger. Somehow in later years accidents are thought to be the fault of our age. It could also be an accident pure and simple. Admittedly, healing from the wounds of an accident might take a bit longer but in the end doing what gives us pleasure might make it worth it. Oldscoot, I recommend healing first and then pick a hobby. Good luck to you!

Plate will help strengthen the ankle. It's a good thing. You might set off the TSA alarms so be sure to tell them you have metal in your ankle. Depends on what type of metal they use. My titanium knee sets it off so i take the body scanner. Then they can see it. See if they can switch out your pain meds to one that doesn't make you sick. Your going to have some pain and especially when you are able to weight bear on that ankle. Need to have some good meds on board. Healing thoughts sent your way, especially on Tuesday. Sounds lie you have a good surgeon. Hang in there.

This is an issue I think about a lot. I'm 69 too and realize I'm not getting any younger, especially in the balance department. I wonder if I can just go on forever or what. Plus, because I'm on blood thinners, any accident with bleeding is much more dangerous to me than others.
My current thinking is that I'm not going to turn myself in an invalid and plan to keep on going as long as possible. That said: One sees almost no truly elderly people on bikes which makes you wonder. I figure if I don't go fast and take advantage of the gyroscopic effect of the wheels, there's no reason to worry about the near future that much. Also, part of me thinking is, as my father used to say, "Once you hit seventy you're on thin ice." I always figure I'm one little pain or mark on my backside away from some doctor telling me I have cancer, so it's not like I'm throwing away tons of good years if something bad happens |

I had my ankle surgery last Tuesday. The surgeon said that everything went well with no complications. I've got a 6 - 8 week period now where I can't put any weight on my foot - which happens to be my dominant foot. So, no walking or driving for this period.

OS best of luck on your surgery. I had a compound fracture 4 years ago from a bicycle accident. Took 3 surgeries, a huge metal plate , 12 big screws, and 2 years ( much of it a wheel chair) to fix. Had 13 PTWs when it happened, sold most of them, and thought I would quit riding. As you and others have said, it's tough to heal at older ages, ( I am 67).
