I just laid a wreath this morning at a Camp X (secret WWII spy camp) memorial ceremony. The Royal Canadian Mounted Police were there along with 2 Intelligence Company. I learned that in honour of this place, the CIA nicknamed their training camp "The Farm."
This evening, we will be watching the new movie "Reunion of Giants." It's a documentary about the reunion of the only flying Lancaster bombers in the world, one Canadian and one British. Thanks to those who made the sacrifice, we get to live in a democracy. Cheers, Bob |

1) Thank you to all who have served and are serving today
2) Thank you all from a Vietnam vet who didn't get that kind of welcome when returning home. #2 is why I never let a man or woman in uniform or veterans who I meet today go without thanking them for their service and sacrifice.

I was in a war but never in the military. Was in Riyadh back in 90' when the gulf war broke out. Since i was there setting up a Burn Center and figured i'd be needed, i stayed. Shipped my household stuff home. Our unit got a couple of burns but thank God it was a short war. Never even crossed my mind to go home if my expertise could be utilized to save our soldiers.

Proud to have served...
Thank you!
It was an honor to have served for 20 years (8/1988 to 8/2008) in the U.S. Marine Corps. However, I was thanked twice each month...on payday. And now, I'm thanked once a month in retirement. Therefore, I would like to thank you all for paying your taxes! In all seriousness though: I also thank all those who have served before me, with me, and those who will continue to serve after me. Semper Fi!

We had a MARDET on the ship that I served on for 4 years and, having a billet that kept me in regular contact with them, they were a positive addition to the crew. People say that Sailors and Marines don't get along but they were some of my best friends both on duty at sea and on liberty while in port that goes for both officer and enlisted marines. Just my 2 cents. |

Welcome home Brother! All my relatives were either Navy or Army. I was the black sheep - Air Force. Although I relate with the Navy more closely. |

DB thanks.I couldn't leave knowing that i could be of service. I had brought my pet bunny over with me and the first day of the war she was having a grand mal seizure when i got home. Called my vet in Hawaii and had a DR order her some Valium. Kept telling people they were using chemicals. Nobody believed me. She died a few months after we got home of a weird kidney disease that my vet had never seen. It took them a while to announce that, yes, chemicals were used and that there was a Gulf War Syndrome. She was a causality of that war. There was no reason she should of had a seizure. We had had months of scud alerts with the sirens. When the sirens went off she ran and guarded her cage.

Paris
Events in Paris last night make me want to dig out the old combat boots and do something...but what? I guess the combat scooter brigade won't really help. How do you address something like that?

I believe it's our duty to serve, and remember, we get paid for serving and come back home alive. Receiving a smile of a fearful and malnourished child in a war zone makes it worth all the effort. Formost, we veterans are there to tell about the real heroes like those who rest at the Omaha Beach cemetery (I recommend a visit) or those who died yesterday in France because of the freedom we enjoy.
Edit: regarding that video here above, it's also heartbreaking to me, but for a special reason. My very first tour, the wife and kids were supported tremendously, but as happens with many fellows, the home support wears out a bit after a few tours, as people "get used to it" and everyone thinks they are all okay. Eventually, that lack of recognition towards the kids leaves them behind, frustrated that dad isn't there for them and nobody seems to care. I know too many fellows that find returning home more difficult than being in a war zone, because everyone recognizes that soldier's effort, except his own kids, angry at him for beeing away again. In retrospect (my own kids are 22 and 25 now) I feel the that the highest price was payed by the kids, even despite the fantastic support of the family. Don't mind the soldiers today, please support their kids back home, again and again and again! It's the best gift to any soldier! |
