Modern Vespa

Hi people!
My name is Stefan Dobrianov-Tedo. I'm a Santa Barbara-based designer/artist. Take a look at my creation - the TEDSTER . It's based on SYM Lance Cali Classic 150cc. This is the first scooter I customized made out of carbon fiber covered with carved leather. I know it's not a Vespa but Currently I work on my second custom project - Vespa 946 - big challenge!!! Looks great. The detail work around the windshield is pretty sharp.

Understand why you went with a plastic body scoot, but the Lance was an... interesting choice.

Personally, I wouldn't go after the 946, or any other vespa. The metal body is going to be a BEAR to work with if your wanting to replace any body parts. I would be looking at the Buddy, or perhaps an Aprilia. Plastic body so you could remove and build your own pretty easily, and a much better running and handling scoot than the lance.

Thank you Kevin! The Buddy is too small and i don't see any retro Aprilia model in there production line. Aether way now I work on a Vespa 946 witch is a big challenge, it's probably the best looking scooter! It's like I'm traying to customize a Ferrari

Well, if you don't mind me asking. What are you planning on doing with the 946? Since it has a one piece body for the most part, are you thinking about covering it with something? Or leaving the body mostly alone and then doing smaller tweak work on the details?

I know the back side panels kinda come off, I guess they could be replaced with something.

Personally, I think you should bring back the rear blinkers the way they were presented on the concept bike. They had led strips built into the rear vent holes, and it looked sharp as hell.

Look forward to seeing what you come up with.

PS, not new, but the Aprilia Mojito could make a sweet project bike.

The Mojito's engine is kind of death - 50cc
For the Vespa - new carved vegy tanned leather seat upholstery, rear fender and handlebar/hand grips wraped up with curved leather, gonna change the rims look, white walls - mandatory!, new pleases for both front and rear blinkers, new design for all vent holes, new design engraved wind screen... And then the future owner will receive tons of attention like this on the pics

have one question: is that fully carbon body or just wrapping of the original with the foil?

please replace OEM rims with at least Zelionis, unless you design something else for it

it says on your website you did custom molds with carbon fibre cloth. could you explain further? are the original panels under there with cloth on top?


if you did a carbon fibre vespa px panels you might sell a few more

I know, someone might even think about that "they are same", but speaking "art design language", quite different

I prefer the Zelioni's since having very clean lines, no un-neccessary braking lines, splits, bulging etc.

they are so modern and very retro as well, an perfect fit to MVs!

they come in several versions:
* chromed fully (normally I do not like too much chromed stuff, but this ones look great)
* gun-metal (machining finish, this I like the most)
* matt black (I would like this more if it would have decent rim's edge, very thin, done as brushed metal and then with the hyperblack coating, similar to what 2015 Vespas GTS are getting)
* matt gold (gold is not my cup of tea! although would be going quite well with my blue metallic Vespa GTS300ie Super 2015)

bsg lump and a bit of a trim on the leggys might do it,cant beat carbon fibre on a race theme imo

personally i dont think scooters lend themselves to carbon .... they just dont look right .... love carbon on helmets .....
id rather have some swaged speedholes on the leggies n panels

well, if you do not like carbon looks, simply spray it over with the desired paint

the trick (and what makes his effort and money spent) is that he has re-made all the parts possible in REAL carbon, meaning that his scooter might had serious diet ==> significant improvement in performance

It's all about design people. What you see on the pics is a prototype with all the imperfections for a prototype. Instead of drawing impossible ideas I prefer real action. I think the result is decent, especially for a prototype made on the drive way, at that time I had no even a shade.

i didnt say i didnt like carbon ... i just dont think it suits a scooter .... and vespas being monocoque theres only parts you can cover which in my eyes looks poor

well, if you replace complete monocoque from metal to carbon, do your math how much weight you save!

what a waste of money to end up with something like this ....... costs a fortune looks like crap .. paint it and nobody knows ...... how much faster would it really be ..... you could make it faster with a grinder and jigsaw at zero cost ....

looks nice,you've done a top job. what process did you use to form the panels or did you layer on top of the originals? seen vacuum bags for home jobs but looks tricky getting it right

had my eye on a carbon mods kit to cover a few px parts so interested how you did it,if you did it

Yes it's the rear of the TEDSTER.

Here's the leather helmet I made for a local scoot girl. It's strange but that was her choice

there's a big difference between making carbon panels and covering originals,and your trying to sell it so it might be worth telling the truth from the start noticed you've just nocked the price down from $18'000 to $14'500. thats a big drop

Wow, that back half looks great. What all do you supply to NASA to make this? You do not have to answer this, but I am curious as to how much NASA charges to do things like this.

Hi guys this seems very clever and they look very well made but i personally don't really like the carbon fibre look ,seems a bit dated to me now ,it was used in the early 80s in f1 and has been bolted on to everything ever since

seems a bit of overkill on commuter size bikes,and i cant imaging it on a vespa px,would make my keyring magnet redundant, how would i test for filler ,but a titanium gearbox would be nice

carbon bog seat n its not even slow close ..... no thanx

its overrated ,very light to lift but doesn't give you a faster bowl movement
tuning wise a madras is a much better upgrade haven't tried a vindaloo as hot seizing is a possibility
