For the last 6000 miles/8 months I have been getting a check engine light at idle and occasionally while riding. (You can see by the mileage how much it bothers me) In that 6000 miles it has shut down a couple of times at idle and once at throttle. If you give it throttle the light will go out. However the light has come on a couple of times at throttle. Shutting the engine off and back on makes the light go away. A computer check says "o2". I can not find anywhere what to do to remedy this problem, so I am turning to the MV community for a answer. Any educated ideas??

Thanks

For cars I have taken off the old O2 and heated with torch, then dip in water to clean. Not sure if a scoot O2 is the same as a car?

Cleaning it was recommend some time ago by a friend. I was headed that way today, but decided to get more input before I tear into it.

And it looks like a new lambda sensor is available from AF1 for $103.90 (part #584344).

I would check the air filter, then clean the throttle body first.

I changed out mine a year or two ago due to an electrical problem. I recall there was a compatible Bosch part that was much cheaper than the Vespa part.

I did a quick search earlier today and saw some Bosche for around $50us. Not sure if the one I looked at is compatible, but I will look further.[/b]

It's a very common sensor, about a $40 part and there are a lot of companies that make it.

You will need to pull the sensor and match it up, amount of wires thread size length of probe.
I bet with some more searching you can find a bosch number.

Alright. Changed the O2 sensor today with no change. Light still comes on after idling for about 5 minutes and goes off with increase of RPM with throttle.

Next suggestion?

If its anything like a car, disconnect it with the key turned on and check the leads for currency and ground with a multi tester

did you clean the throttle body?
At idle the throttle is completely closed, and uses passages in the throttle body.

Success.....maybe
Ok, I may have solved the problem. Sorry it took so long, but, what the heck, the scooter was running.

The problem had been a check engine light after a few minutes of idle, a few times at speed, and occasional engine shut down at idle. It would restart and if you added throttle at any time the light would go away. This problem had been around for the last 8 months and 7,000 miles. Computer fault said O2 sensor and we changed that with no change.

I finally had time and Darren finally had time so I took it down to him at Vespa Servicing in Bradenton to pull and clean the thorttle. I had not jumped in to this area before and wanted knowledge and to get it done in 2 hours instead of 10. You will see from the pictures that it was really needed. We had tried spraying carburetor cleaner a while back with no luck and to be honest did not expect any.

In the throttle body there is a small bypass that comes into play at ideal. It took about 6 q-tips and lots of carburetor cleaner to clean it.

We knew that the throttle union was deteriorated and had ordered a new. However, the evap connection was on the opposite side from the location on the old one. Instead of installing a longer tube we chose to just disconnect the evap system.

In the process of doing this we found that evap tube was deteriorated and broken and had been for some time.

For now all is well and I feel that it will stay that way until Everett, Washington

Yes and no change to responsiveness. Which is a bit of a surprise, but it never did act sluggish or slow.
