Tried to title this thread so that people don't get here by accident!

Anyhow, been trying to get the golf started after 5 years of slumber in the car port.

New bat, new plugs, new fuel

Going to get some seafoam like product to help with any gunk in the lines and maybe some starting fluid.

No leaks from anywhere and compression sounds very good.

Going to run the seafoam through the system and see If she fires up.

Anyhow, just wondering if there's any protips for bringing an engine back to life?

Not part of any other forums, so I am terribly sorry for the German invasion.

Cheers all!!

Hi,
I would change the engine oil and oil filter and air filter, and check for perished or cracked hoses. When you get it running OK I would change the brake fluid (it absorbs moisture from the air) and the coolant. Check the tyres for sidewall cracks and make sure the brakes are not seized/sticking. Hope you get it going OK.

Its probably too late to say it but if it hasn't turned over for several years you should ( have) removed the spark plugs and run a small quantity of engine oil into each cylinder. Then after leaving it to soak for a while you should have spun the engine over ( with plugs still out ) to remove any excess oil. You could also have used something like Redex ( if its still available) rather than engine oil. If the engine is healthy and the battery is fully charged there is no reason why the engine should not start normally without any other special treatment. Don't forget to check the tyres and brakes carefully and thoroughly.

most likely need to clean your injectors, and some injector cleaner in the fuel is probably going to be very important for the fuel system in general to work out its grimy cobwebs

Thanks for the input guys!

And roadster I am a little too late with that one!

Its the 16v fuel injected engine, cant remember the displacement right now actually! (that's how long its been)

Anyhow,

Yes I think I am all funked up. Turns over strong but will not catch but will under starter fluid.

New lines and a good clean of the injectors are in order.

There are about 400,000 miles on this motor, but still ran like a champ before its slumber.

Hoping the aftermarket immobiliser isn't causing an issue!

Will try again tomorrow!(being transferred at work )

If it fires when using ether spray ( I assume that's what the starter fluid is) then you are most likely lacking fuel pressure. Can you hear the fuel pump in the tank? It may only run for ten seconds when the ignition is switched on. You may also be able to feel the pressure rise if you can grab and bend any of the flexible fuel feed lines.

sounds like the vehicle has the ABF motor. 2.0l 16v motronic fuel injection. off to a good start. great cars. New battery, change engine oil and filter, fresh fuel and filter.
sounds like the fuel pump is seized up from sitting or corroded connections. Start there and get it fired up. let it warm to operating temperature and take it for a drive.
I've been working on V.A.G. cars for 20 years now. The MK3 is probably my favorite platform.
Good luck
