I gave an old Chinese 150cc scooter frame away to a friend to scrap. I am not sure what I can do about the title now and how to get it off my property taxes. Anyone have any suggestions?
Thanks!

I would contact your DMV and let them know what you did , they may just have you turn in your title.

Yes, I have paid property tax in the past on it, so I assume it will show on my taxes this year.
Thanks! |

Take the title to the DMV and give it back to them. Have them take it off your property taxes. Get a letter or form stating that you turned it in. If it shows up at tax time you can take the letter to the DMV and get it fixed.

P some states do it. When i lived in VA i had to pay a yearly "luxury" tax on my kayaks, bikes etc. Don't know if they still do it. Real PIA. Costly also.

We would pay a one off tax at purchase of a new vehicle and a yearly "road tax" but not an actual "pay to own it annual tax"

In New Zealand we pay a vehicle licensing fee annually.
The larger proportion of the fee is an Accident Compensation Levy. Hospital is free in New Zealand and accidents are covered by this The smaller portion is to maintain the number plate system so that vehicles can be identified and tracked through curent ownership. Works well and I do not consider it a tax per se. |

WEB this was back in the 70's and i had to pay tax on my kayaks. I remember that vividly because it pissed me off.Don't know if they do it now. I wasn't scooting back then so i had nothing motorized. I was taking kayaking classes in NC at the Nantahala Outdoor Center. Kayaked the Chatooga river. The river they filmed the movie Deliverance on. I lived in a area (in NY) where taxes were low. Every county has a different tax bracket. Mine was rural. NYC taxes are outrageous. When in VA in the 70's i lived in Richmond out on the edge ,right before Short Pump. K never had Prada's or a Rolex. However the Kayak can be used on rivers, lakes, oceans etc. My friend had a little sunfish sailboat that he had to pay luxury tax on. I think since it was considered a "water vehicle" it got taxed. Not so weird.

Yeah, the commonwealth of vaginya used to send agents around (1950's-1960's) to each house to go thru and tax pretty much everything in sight. It went back to a practice from the 1700's.
Now they just tax property they have a record of.....such as vehicles. And each county does it separately. It creates a bureaucracy in itself. Comrades of the commonwealth of vaginya hate the process.....it's very inefficient and creates for more time wasting record keeping compared to a few other states that base the annual state vehicle registration fee somewhat on the value of the vehicle....a much more simple and streamlined process. fried okra |

Another cost NY has that to a much lesser amount Virginia and all southern states have is snow removal and repairs to roads from frost damage, then again this is a problem all the snow belt states have to deal with that our southern neighbors don't. But to get back to paying a tax just because you have a title for a vehicle that is not even licensed for use on the road is crazy! Not to mention a little kayak! Is that kayak going to wear out the water in the river or lake? |

K exactly. I never had to pay taxes in NY so i don't know what they'd be. Parents did but the state tax is different in every county. I think bicycles were taxed as well. I had a few things that i had to pay. Don't remember what i paid in state taxes tho.Surprised they didn't tax my ski's.

And people think NY State is a high tax state? We pay sales tax when we buy something and annual registration on licensed vehicles but if you have a bunch of old scooters or motorcycles that you have the title for but are not licensing for use you pay nothing. If they charge "luxury" take on a kayak do they also charge that on a pair of Prada's? or a Rolex watch?[/quote] I live near Binghamton in the Empire State. I have a friend down on Long Island with bikes. He pays something like $45 a year in registration while I pay $17.50 for the same sized bikes. Oddly enough it's based on some strange formula I can't even begin to understand. |
