If you turn it into something to be used outside (planter, ornament, whatever), I'd suggest removing the styrofoam. I lost a bicycle helmet to "dirt dobber" wasps after leaving it outside on the bike overnight. I noticed they had burrowed into the foam on my pre-ride inspection. The mud plugs were the "insta-NOPE" decision. Lots of bugs will go after the foam for nesting.
When I feel a helmet is no longer safe for me or my passenger, I cut the strap and crush a section with a hammer - then discard it. If I think it is unsafe for me to use further, I certainly don't intend that it be used by another rider, especially someone's child or youth.
