Modern Vespa

His there I've been a lurker for a while and have enjoyed the wealth of knowledge the forum has. I must say a big thanks to all the people who take the time to forward all the usefully information.
I have had my mp3 ( 500 asr model) since March this year and totally love riding it. I have put just under 5000 miles on it in that time, I mainly ride with my other half on the bike.
I'm totally new to riding a motorcycle but with the stability of the mp3 I have taken it to like a duck to water. I have riden in the countryside and city centres as well as motorways and country roads and both me and the beast take it in our stride.

Still enough waddle and what I was posting for was the beast has been put to bed for the winter, I don't want to ride on salty roads and spoil the bike.
I have washed and oiled it, changed the engine oil and air filter, put the battery on a optimiser and also put stabiliser in the petrol.
I'm only planning to keep it under cover for till about February/ March is it worth me doing anything more to it?

I bought my MP3 500 for my daily commute to Cardiff and rode it all through last winter without a problem. The only thing that would have stopped me would have been snow.

If you are keeping yours garaged the only thing I would do is start it up maybe once a week and get the engine up to temperature.

Personally I do not run my scooters at all during winter. Fuel stabilizer, change the oil if past half life, clean the air filter, and put it on a battery tender. Winter is my time to do the major maintenances that are either due or will be soon next season, like changing tires, valve adjustment, adding accessories, etc.

But as for starting it weekly, I leave mine sit for months. If you start it, the initial blast of fuel, and some more of it until it warms up, can get into the crankcase oil and it won't come out until prolonged running at temperature. So in the end you will be adding fuel and perhaps water to the oil, and not running it long enough to get rid of it.

DON'T start it up weekly. UNLESS you intend to go out and ride it.

Worst thing you can do to your motor is start and let it idle.

if you are going to let it sit, pull the battery and keep it in your basement or somewhere that it is going to stay at a fairly decent temp, ie not 30F day in and day out and on a tender/trickle charger. My battery was just fine this spring when i pulled it and kept it in the house. Started right up on the first try.

The start up and not putting a load on the internal parts just does more harm than good.

I just fill the tank to keep moisture from building up, do a good fluid check, clean the bike, put on center stand and turn off tilt lock (make sure you don't forget that it is not on when you start up and pull off center stand), and cover.

This will suffice until you ready to ride again next year.

Cheers for all the replies, I'm happy with what I have done just one question arises from the replies. I have removed the battery and put it on a optimiser buy I have it stored in the shed, should I bring it indoors or will it be OK out there?

Personally I'd bring it inside.

I ride my 250 through winter. The best running bikes are ones that are ridden daily. The bike can handle the winter. Bikes are made to be ridden in all types of weather.
