Hello Modern Vespa. I have my sights on a 2007 200L w/ 5000 miles. I'm meeting the owner early next week to check out the scooter. I'm fairly new to modern Vespas. Can those of you who know please give direction as to what to look for on this scooter. I need to make sure it comes with a blue and a red key. That's about all I know. Thank you in advance!

If it has been garaged for most of its life then it should be in good condition. Check the exhaust has no holes, check the exhaust header bolts aren't broken. Pull out the seat bucket and take a close look at the engine, fuel hoses etc. Take the radiator cap off and check the coolant for signs of oil or gunk. Check the oil condition and look for excesive rust under the body and along the front seam. Check condition of the shocks, brake discs, tyres, brake pads.
Take it for a ride of you can. Start it up several times. Check it hasn't been warmed up when you arrive. |

Take her for aa ride, bring along a friend who knows bikes. If possible take into a shop for a once over That should not cost too much, when can never be 100% sure but it never hurts to protect yourself. Being this is not a good one for seeing be honest with the guy say you want to take it to a Scooter Shop, if he really stand be hind his bike there should not be a problem.

I'd try to keep it low, under $3,000 for sure but $2,000 to $2,500 he might even go lower, they are much harder to sell going into Festivus , have cash. $1,700 right now (wave them bills) might work. |

They are great scooters.
The advice above is all good. Ask about service records too. At that age and mileage, it needs new tires. The belt will need changing soon too. I would change oil and coolant upon purchase as well. The fuel line is prone to crack at that age, and the vacuum hose too. That age and mileage makes it a good find. If it has been maintained well and kept in a garage, and is in perfect condition, $2,400 to $2,800 is reasonable. If you can do better, good for you. To give you confidence, I bought a 2005 with 6000 miles on it in late February. It was owned last by a very conscientious fellow who had worked it over to make it perfect. I have ridden it 10,500 miles since with no issues at all. |

IMHO the 200's are one of the best scooters out there. Bill has one with over 60,000 miles on it (65,000 i think). He's right about the tires and lines. Maybe the belt as well. If it hasn't been changed. What are they asking for it? That would give us a better idea on what to advise you to offer him. Don't worry nobody will try and buy it out from under you. Can't go wrong with a 200. If they won't let you ride it have them ride it and listen and see how it runs. Maybe they'll let you ride on the back. It should start right away and not make any noises. The 200's are prone to some "farting/moaning" on deceleration. Normal exhaust thing for some of them. Also see how old the battery is. If it's 3 or 4yrs old you might be needing a new one as well. Especially if the bikes been sitting and not ridden. They like to be ridden. Good luck and keep us updated on how it's going.

I did it. Been working on the seller since November. Just brought it home today. 2007 GT200 with 3,900 miles. PO just had it at the Vespa dealer for a new battery and carb clean. Sticker under the seat shows next service due at 4,500. One owner always garaged. I paid $1,850 for it.
Thank you for all the advice! This will be the 4th Vespa I'v owned with the first two being 1970's small frames. |

Ohhhh, congrats on that purchase!
I have the GTS model, but I wouldn't hesitate to buy a GT model. Something about a carbureted Vespa that is tried and true. |

Nothing else to say but congratulations. Enjoy. I am impressed by the price you paid with the top box and original wind screen.

Thank you everyone for the nice responses. I need to get rid of that huge pope mobile windshield. Looking around a bit, there aren't a lot of options for Vespa windshields. The GT200 will replace my Buddy 170i. Genuine makes an awesome scooter, I was looking for something with a little more power and a smoother ride. Ended up here by way of a SYMHD 200 and a Kymco Like. Never thought I could afford a large frame modern Vespa until I found this hidden on CL back in November. (it was pretty well hidden, didn't have the word scooter anywhere in his post, and had no pictures).
If someone can provide me with a link for a service manual, I'd be grateful. |

But you can honestly find anything you want to know here, especially in the Wiki section. |
