Is anyone using the malossi foam filter in the stock airbox and does it work ok?

My Stock filter in the airbox is dirty and was going to change it out and put the red foam filter in rather than use the stock one again, anyone had any issues.

Cheers.

Always used the Red ones .....no problems here (make sure you lightly oil it before installing).

I put mineral oil on mine, seems to be the right viscosity . I think it will not damage the foam or plastics as well? Will also moisturize your hands at the same time. Whew emoticon

Another way is too use engine oil and then run it through to ringing pins. Its what my dealer does.

By ringing pin I mean one of those Victorian drying... Things

I'm pretty sure engine oil would make the foam deteriorate faster.

I hope not, they said they've been doing it for years with no problems... Is engine oil acidic?

So what is the difference between Malossi and grey stocker besides color? "Pores" in foam are bigger?

I have been using the Malossi red in both the GTS 300 and the Fly 190. I use Rotella diesel for the coating, with no adverse effects for the last two years.

I got fed up of getting oil everywhere so I bought a can of filter oil (pictured).

Only used it once so far. But it's much easier to apply and is very sticky.

Why does the filter need lubrication? (Never serviced my scoot myself)
Does it require lubricating frequently?

The air filter is oiled to make it sticky, so that it grabs onto, and holds, dirt and dust better. To protect the engine from the little bits of dust.

Yup, the spray kind is probably the probably the most sticky. I think it needs cleaning and re lubing when it is visibly dirty? It depends on the environment where is is ridden that determines how often it needs to be cleaned.

I have one and it works fine. I just use a little of my engine oil to lube it. Should probably get some of the stickier stuff tho.

I'm not so sure everyone has seen this particular question.
So I would not be so quick to suggest NO one knows.
But I for one, do not know.

Sheesh....

As I understand it - the red one is Red (it's their corporate colour) and the Dual element has two types of foam - one side is finer than the other (for extra dusty environments).

That's basically the difference. The Dual Foam one filters down to a smaller particle. Oil on the air filter is particularly effective for filtering fine dust and sand, which is why you see it used a lot on motocross bikes. The particles stick to the oil.
I've used many of the different air filter oils over the years, and it's easier and cheaper to mix equal parts gasoline and motor oil, soak the filter in the mixture, wring it out, and let the gasoline evaporate. That will give you a very even coat through the entire filter.
One thing I've seen with a lot of Vespa and other foam filters is that over time they decompose. So you can have a bike with 4000 miles over a ten year period, and the filter falls apart in your hands the first time you go to change it.

would you consider the dual element filter to be a 'better' all around filter for any environment?

It depends on what you are trying to accomplish. If you are trying to squeeze all you can out of a performance top end and open exhaust, the red filter is the way to go. If you are replacing the OEM filter on a stock bike, the dual foam filter is the right choice. But I don 't think you are going to notice any difference in terms of longevity of the motor no matter which filter you go with.
