They only ride side saddle when wearing a skirt.

There are even aftermarket running boards (left side only) available for the purpose.

I bought one a few years ago on a business trip to India (there, most women wearing Saris ride side saddle and need a place to rest their feet). When not in use, it folds up (as seen in the pic), so it isn't in the way.
