I'm thinking of hooking up an Arduino to my Vespa GTS250. In particular, I'm interested in the speed. The circuit diagram doesn't show any sort of speed sensor at all - but clearly it's not entirely mechanical, otherwise you couldn't have a digital odometer.

Do es anyone have any idea how I'd ask the instrument cluster about the current speed?

Welcome to MV Paul.

Best bet might be to do something independent. Put a magnet on a wheel and sense rotation with a reed switch.

First of all, shalom and welcome to MV from Israel.

Your project sounds interesting.

But I'd be leery of the speed indicated by the Vespa speedo. It is about as accurate as a drunk, randy bloke in a pub bragging about the size of his junk. In other words; wildly optimistic and little connection to reality.

The simplest way of doing this is to just use a GPS shield for the Arduino. They are actually quite cheap and would probably allow you to also show time of day, and compass direction. You could also have it remember your home and then give you a pointer showing which way home is and how far. Having a magnet on the wheel would work but it requires more hardware exposed to the elements, it would be more prone to failure and would also result in a less accurate system.

I have the GTS 250 and can't say I ever look at the speedo as the needle shakes up and down and the figures are all in kph anyway. There are small numbers in mph but I can't read them while riding. It's a bit poor that Vespa don't install a different paper background for the speedo that only shows mph in countries that use mph.

Welcome to MV, Paul.

The "sensor " you are looking for is in the speedometer assy and reads the rpm of the speedo cable. Not sure how easy it would be to try to tap into it.

Hmm. What I should do, then, is head down to the shop and ask if they have any broken instrument panels that I could have a look at.

What I'm thinking of doing, BTW, is rig up a persistence-of-vision display with a strip of NeoPixels. If I could get it displaying 'Vespa" to start with, that would be cool.

Interesting- do scooters have OBDII ports? if so, there are a myriad of options available for this type of thing.
