I'm thinking about installing the Malossi upgear kit on my otherwise stock GTV in an effort to gain a little more top end on the highway. From what I've seen, even though everyone seems to have this kit listed as working with 300's only, it also works on 250's. Does anyone have any personal experience with this kit? I'm curious to know what it does to low speed acceleration (0-20mph) and if it makes a substantial difference on the top end. I installed one on a 2 stroke Honda I used to have and it made a world of difference, but I also installed a larger cylinder, etc. on that bike. On my GTV I only want to install the gear and keep everything else (including the variator) stock.

Have you tried a 140 rear tyre rather than the stock 130?

It fits no problem and gives you ever so slightly higher gearing.

Yes it fits on the 250, check some of the 2012 cannonball threads

The one down side to taller gearing is that it is much more sensitive to roller weight and a bit slower off the line (0-10mph). I'd consider a good tachometer, a range of roller weights (Dr Pulley), and experience in swapping them to be prerequisites for the upgear.

That said, when it's all dialed in, an upgear can be really nice. No more bumping off the rev limiter, slightly higher cruising speed, and amazing downhill speeds.

How slight are we talking? Can I get 5mph out of it?

lots of variables here, changing the gearing is not going to produce any more power and ultimately that's what it takes to go faster. That said, max power comes at ~8000 rpm and the rev limiter is at 9200. so if you can drop the RPMs back down to 8000 you do have more power.

I picked up 2-4mph on my GT on flat ground (full tuck), I'd not expect to get more than that. The plus is that the engine is running at a much better RPM doing it. And I can hit 92 on the down hill.
