Reliability over time. The more gears you cram into a gearbox, the thinner you have to make the gears...unless you enlarge the gearbox, which adds weight, which cuts into top speed. The thinner the gears, the faster they wear out and the more prone to breaking they become. For a motorcycle/scooter designed for racing, a gearbox overhaul after every or every few races is expected. For a daily-rider, street-use bike...not so much. |

The Japanese racers in the 1960s looked great. The German Kreidler 50s had the most complicated gearchange for any racer - four speed foot change and three speed hand change a la Vespa, giving twelve. Quite how you worked through that at racing speeds defies belief! The sound of a pack of 50s accelerating away from the start line was something not easily forgotten!
I used to love going to Oulton Park back then, watching the old Brit singles and twins get swallowed up by the Italian and then the Japanese multis. The sound of a Honda 250 or 350 6-cylinder was amazing. I don't think we've had a bike racer yet to match Mike Hailwood. He could (and did) ride literally anything, any capacity, and make winning look easy. Mind you, on a Manx Norton, Derek Minter took some beating. |
