The 50cc racing motorcycle has 14 gears.

So why do so many still have 5?

Reliability over time. The more gears you cram into a gearbox, the thinner you have to make the gears...unless you enlarge the gearbox, which adds weight, which cuts into top speed.
The thinner the gears, the faster they wear out and the more prone to breaking they become. For a motorcycle/scooter designed for racing, a gearbox overhaul after every or every few races is expected. For a daily-rider, street-use bike...not so much.

Can we settle on 7 with a dual clutch, paddle shifters and a computer the blips the engine on downshift?

Very highly tuned 2-stroke engines give astonishing power but only over a very narrow rev range, so you need a heck of a lot of gears to keep it there.

Or a well set up CVT. I used to own a Gilera Runner 180SP 2-stroke and that thing weighed nothing but seemed to accelerate as quickly as a 600cc sports bike. Easily the most fun bike I've ever owned. Italjet also made a Dragster 180SP which was essentially the same engine but in a really funky frame.

Bingo! It all depends on how broad the torque curve is.

15 seems like a lot to manage, though... Razz emoticon

I think some of the racy 125 street legal bikes have 7. Cagiva Mito springs to mind.

The Japanese racers in the 1960s looked great. The German Kreidler 50s had the most complicated gearchange for any racer - four speed foot change and three speed hand change a la Vespa, giving twelve. Quite how you worked through that at racing speeds defies belief! The sound of a pack of 50s accelerating away from the start line was something not easily forgotten!

I used to love going to Oulton Park back then, watching the old Brit singles and twins get swallowed up by the Italian and then the Japanese multis. The sound of a Honda 250 or 350 6-cylinder was amazing. I don't think we've had a bike racer yet to match Mike Hailwood. He could (and did) ride literally anything, any capacity, and make winning look easy. Mind you, on a Manx Norton, Derek Minter took some beating.
