Hi,

I'm just browsing this forum and thought I will register, introduce myself and ask few questions.

My name is Raf and I just bought Vespa ET4 from year 2000. It's alright but needs some work done which I don't mind as I like and I'm not afraid to take things apart and fix them. I've just passed my CBT yesterday and took scooter for a spin and couple of things that needs to be sorted soon I suspect.

1. There is some sort of screeching noise (sort of similar a bit when reversing fast in a car) coming from the rear wheel area somewhere. You start to hear it when it gets to about 10 mph and over. It's fairly loud (especially when riding in the tunnel). It seems louder when I'm slowing down (say I go up to 30 and stop throttling and bike slows down and the noise is 'more noisy'(?) I've checked the wheel and doesn't seem to have any play (just a bit like 1mm or so) and not sure what to do next there. The pitch of the noise goes with the speed if that's any more help?

2. When idling the bike is cutting out after a while or going high with revs? I thought it's because it's bit cold recently but after 15 min ride it's still the same. When on stand the wheel spins sometimes quite fast, when on ground and stopping sometimes feels like I'm accelerating and moment later it cuts out.

I know it's more for tech part of the form but here is my and my bike and these issues. Otherwise it's quite fun to ride it!

I appreciate any help.

Cheers!

Sounds like something is wrong with your clutch. I would suggest you take off the cover and you will see if anything is amiss.

Also, since it is new to you, I would also suggest you go over and make sure the engine oil is in good shape, also rear hub oil, tires, brake fluid, brake pads, coolant.... There are manuals to be found on this site, if you are handy, in the wiki section (link to the upper left just under the MV logo).

Welcome to MV!

Sounds like the former turn the idle up too high to compensate for something. Agree with above advice: Pull the cover and have a look at the belt, rollers and especially the clutch assembly. Then check out the rest. Get your hands dirty, have fun and you will be ready for Spring riding.

Thanks guys!

I've had a quick look now but don't have any tools to undo the nut to take the clutch drum off I'm afraid. Haynes manual is on it's way as we speak, should be with me on Tuesday (I'm away tomorrow anyway). It looks reasonably fine from outside, obviously that's not saying much in this case. I think I'll do the whole service (oils (engine and hub), filters, clutch parts if they look worn etc). Scooter has almost 15k on the clock at the moment. It didn't have any problems with mot and was serviced by previous owner about a year ago.

Any ideas how to take that drum without special tools?

Cheers!

Squeeze the rear brake while removing the nut.
Or use an impact wrench (this is fine to remove the fasteners, but I'd rather strongly suggest not to use it to install).

Thanks! I'do all that on Tuesday as I'm going away for tomorrow.
Is it ok to ride on it at this stage or highly not recommended?
