I love fishing (SurfCasting), & love Riding... so now am trying to work out how to combine the 2...

does anyone have ideas on how to carry long thingees on a Vespa?

Rods are up to 16'4" (5.0m), 3-section, therefore about 6' (1.9m) lengths.
Suppose this is also relevant to surfers for carrying boards etc.

& NO, I'm not going to cut a Bazooka holder into the cowl!

I'm sure by using a rear rack and crash bars as attachment points, using rubber sleeves from electrical conduit hangers to protect the chrome, hose clamps/ thin strapping to wrap around a piece of PVC that has a cap on the bottom.
But I'm just thinking.

Walk the isles at Lowes or HD, and look at every bit of hardware in electrical/hardware/plumbing

This is a surfboard rack, but you get the idea. Can't be too hard to make something up.

just put a bit of poly pipe on your back rack facing up and take of the reel.

I have been thinking about this one for quite a while as I like to surfcast as well. When I visit the parents place in Pensacola, I have tried a kids bicycle trailer behind a bicycle for the twelve mile ride out to the beach. I had issues with the handle as well as the skinny bike tires once I arrived, because the sand is like sugar and you can't ride through it. Attaching to the Fly was a fiasco with rods and shrimp strewn down the street. I am going to try a bungee to a PVC rod holder and the tackle/bait in the carrier. I will try this Saturday and report back.

people use pvc to make rod holders on their scooters all the time down here in key west. 1 out of 50 scooters seems to have one. go to a boating store and buy a basic 3 rod holder, add bungees or ratchet straps, viola!

check this:

the adjustable surf board holder looks great.
I do wonder what happens when one needs to stop in a hurry, as support is close together, & there is nothing at the front to stop in tipping/dipping (ie nothing connecting it to the leg-shield

couldn't use the rod holders pointing up, as would feel its too tall

Could you do something like the surfboard rack -- only with a PVC pipe on the side of the scooter and angled up and back? Hang a flag on your fishing rod.

If I follow you, that's what I was thinking.. Something like PVC (capped on the bottom and large enough in diameter to hold the pole handle) in a row, secured somehow by something ( Razz emoticon ) that has the poles standing upright like the flag.

not my scooter, just a pic from a google search.
you wouldnt need to cap the bottom, it will fill with water and debris. you could drill a drain i guess. just cut a slot to accommodate the reel handle so it sits lower and keeps it secure. a tiny bunjie could be added to secure it better as well.
most ppl have wire bicycle baskets on the backs of their scooters and the pvc tubes are very popular and cheap too...
theres ppl down here that carry the rods upright. ive seen guys with 8' poles cruising around. we have no low underpasses or bridges here either. ill try to get some pics around town this weekend.
you could angle them back like 30 deg. too keep them lower and out of the faces of traffic behind you.
