I took an hour ride today. About half that time was at speeds 50+ mph. The other half was mostly 30 - 40 mph with a lot of stops at intersections. During the ride, I didn't experience any issues.

After returning home and shutting off the engine, I attempted to restart it just a few minutes later, but it would not start. After several attempts, I noticed that I was not hearing the fuel pump kick on when I turned the key to ON.

I browsed the forum and found posts about fuel pumps getting hot. So, I waited an hour and made another attempt. As soon as I turned the key, I could hear the fuel pump spring to life. The engine started right up!

If the hot fuel pump issue is what I experienced, then why didn't it give me problems during the ride? Why only after being shut down???

Anything else I should be considering?

Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks!

The fuel cools the pump. After a long ride, the fuel sits in the pump and the area heat sinks.

There's been a recall on them I think. Look into that.

Unfortunately, I don't believe '06s are part of the recall.

I also don't think the '06 was part of the recall. Shoot SDG a PM (dealer in CA) and see if your VIN is on the list. Good luck.

So why will the fuel pump continue to run when it's hot, but then not restart? Could it be that the impeller's momentum is able to keep it turning, but once stopped, it just won't begin to turn again due to the clearance issues cause from the expansion?

Just trying to understand. It's only happened once, but I've only been out for 3 rides since purchase.

Things like this will bug me. I'll probably change it out just so I won't have to worry about being stranded somewhere. Too bad the process looks to be a pain.

Thanks!

My best understanding (guess) about the recall pumps was the impeller plastic type or sizes were slightly off when chinese based production started (in '09 models). They would expand slightly and seize. The time the engine gets the hottest is just after shutdown after a high speed ride. The engine is hot from the ride and the coolant's no longer circulating to carry the heat off. The fuel pump sits right above the engine. In your case, your scooter's not the right age for that to be the failure mode (the recalled pumps failed in the first year in a few thousand miles from new).

Yeah, it looks like I need to replace the fuel pump. It locked up again today, and it took more than an hour of cooling down before it would work again.

Unfortunately, the '06 models were not in the recall. Just recently purchased this scoot with less than 3,000 miles on it. Sounds like the same problem considering the symptoms and low mileage.

You're in luck. The GTS 250 uses a common 30mm in tank fuel pump. 5 years ago, there wasn't much choice but to buy a factory oem pump which cost around $250 dollars. You can buy an excellent after market replacement fuel pump with lifetime warranty for under $40.00. Yamaha's had all kinds of problems with faulty fuel pumps around 2007. They never officially did a recall on the issue, but if you were persistent you could get it replaced under an "environmental warranty". I had 3 friends get pumps replaced this way. By the time mine went out my scooter had 18,000 miles and the air intake had been severely modded. I replaced it my self at a cost of $40.00 and two hours of my time. Here is a fast motion of a GTS 250 fuel pump change. Looks pretty easy:

My 2006 250ie did the same thing. I had very slightly overfilled the fuel tank and some had spilled into the overflow and the safety wouldn't allow the engine to start.
After a few days the fuel evaporated from the overflow tank and no issues since.
Give this problem a few warm days before going to the expense of a new pump.

The OP's description sounds nothing like a tank venting problem so, no, I don't think that would be "problem over".

Hi Dooglas,
The overflow issue is not tank venting, it's overfilling the fuel tank into the evap system.
Thanks!

Actually, it is. The evap system vents the fuel tank through an activated charcoal canister which absorbs fuel vapor. If you overfill the fuel tank you can force liquid fuel into the charcoal canister. It is supposed to drain back through the fuel system or evaporate. If it does not, the fuel tank does not vent normally.
