Nice bike... I wouldn't mess the paint with a clear coat; just pound the dents out and clean/polish. If you take care of it it's not going to rust and crumble.

Here's my '64 Allstate before and after. Your VBB has way less dents; it should be real easy to get it nice looking.

Hey All,
got around to doing some work on the bike today. spent some time with the engine cowl. I got new trim, but it doesn't fit like the original, and is a little longer , so I decided to use the original trim, tapped out the dents and polished. I think the old scratches go better with the bike anyway. I used Evap-o-rust with mixed results (did not take all rust off, but took some. soaked for twelve hours), then used T-Cut light blue and buffed the paint and waxed twice. also got some new cowl rubber trim.

Small update: spent the weekend disassembling the body to an extent. Someone sprayed the inside of the cowl glove box with royal blue paint years ago. Used laquer thinner and steel wool to remove the paint down to the original color. Clay barred, buffed, polished, and waxed the paint. Banged out small dents in the original trim, and polished most of the aluminum component, then reassembled with all new rubber. Pics later

I'd also say be ready for screws to break off and or deform if it's an old untouched bike. And be ready with a drill and metric tap and die set!

Here's where we are at:
I am very happy with the finish. I used Mothers clay bar, Maguire's Ultimate Compound, followed by Maguire's Ultimate polish, and finished with Mother's Brazilian carnauba wax. I replaced all the rubber trim at the seams of the body. All new cowl hardware, new Shell horn and rubber grommet. Also I used Mother's aluminum and metal polish and easiest way to polish I have ever seen. May do the entire motor case. literally you wipe it on, rub it around, and wipe it off. Hope you all approve!

Also I'm sure a lot of you know this, but I was able salvage the old trim by tapping out the dents (to an extent) then sanding the road rash with progressively smoother paper then fine steel wool followed by the mothers mag and aluminum polish. While not perfect at all it turned out very presentable especially when you are not going for a perfect restoration. Just a tip from this amateur

Got the gearshift tube out to fix the gap that was there between the aluminum fitting and the headset. The tube is bent, tried to straighten without success. New gearshift ordered

update
spent the last couple weekends removing and reinstalling the floor rails etc. the reproductions rails look great now but I had to drill and trim at almost every turn. I tried using pop rivets at first, but they just didn't hold tightly enough, so I reverted to old school peen rivets like they did at the factory. They are not perfect but for my first time and without help, I am very happy with the result. Also found the proper hardware for the rear brake I was missing, and spent some time polishing it. *boiled* the rubber floor mat, and brake pedal pad before installation; HUGE DIFFERENCE in ease of install. Boiling softens rubber just enough to make it fit right, and then it hardens as it cools. Off to disassemble and seal the gas tank now. Cheers fellas! 8)

Spent some time this morning with my dremel and and sanded the headset under where the chrome headlight trim sits to get the new headlight bezel to fit. pretty happy with it, Happy Memorial Day!

gearshift update
Got a 'new' gearshift tube today. They are old stock parts and I was informed they wouldn't be perfect, and they were right. I wasn't happy with the aluminum fitting that was on it because it seemed smaller (maybe from sanding and polishing?) and the numbers were worn and bigger than the originals. To be expected as these are pulled from junk scoots that have likely been outside for a time. Luckily, I knocked the original off the bent shifter and I was able to heat the new one, bang it off, and then do the reverse to install the original fitting. Fixed the gap, and put all the cables back into their right place. More to come!

Finished the headset today. Installed a new clutch cable, because the new/old one was damaged when I took it out of the gearshift. New gearshift tube, original aluminum fitting polished and installed. New grips. Lubed up. Cheers

update.
Planned to reseal the gas tank using an Eastwood Kit I got from a friend, but even with the correct fuel tap wrench was unable to ge the nut off, so I figured I'd leave good enough alone. After that, I finished cleaning out the gas tank by sloshing around small nuts and screws with lacquer thinner, then blew it out with compressed air, cleaned the fuel bowl, lightly sanded and clear coated the top, and installed new tank rubber. also installed the fuel line grommet (boiled prior to install approx 10 min, replaced a few missing rivets on the vespa badge, added a couple factory stickers, and general reassembly. up next is the motor reinstallation and test firing (fingers crossed). More to come as usual. home stretch I hope.

Nice work, we would agree I think on what to replace and what to keep. I must say this is probably the mintiest original 'RUNNING IN' sticker I've seen. Without those small flaws in it, I'd have thought it was a replacement.

Gotcha VooDoo that's totally a reproduction sticker. Just cleaned the area, soaked in water, and applied using a towel to lightly smooth air pockets and wrinkles but thank you I appreciate it. There's really A LOT of work in the scooter despite me keeping the paint. Just about every nut and bolt has been taken off and either cleaned or replaced

just got it running...idle still seems high, and does not change when I turn the screw on top of the air filter. I know the go to answer is that it is an oil seal on one of the sides of the case, but these are brand new. unless one blew out that quickly on me. really want to avoid dropping the motor again...help

check the slide. Take off the air filter and make sure the slide can close all the way. Maybe the throttle cable is keeping it from closing all the way. The idle adjustment screw should allow you to open the slide for the correct speed.

just checked that out hibbert. thankfully I think this is the problem, I unhooked the throttle cable and started the bike, it resulted in a low idle. I then rehooked the cable and lubed the slide up some, and that helped, however I think the slide may be tired, or maybe there is a tired spring that needs replacing.

so now that I believe this to be the problem, where do I go from here? full replacement, or a couple new parts? thanks for the help!

Throttle cable might be too short. A few things to check. If you disconnect the cable you could maybe rig something to pull the slide open while it is running to verify the slide is working good. You should have an adjuster on the box you may be able to get some slack there. Also check inside the headset to make sure the housing is seated properly and not taking space out of the cable. Depending on what type of cable you have: some have both ends crimped and some have a screw on end at the headset. If you have this type you may be able to get more space there by adjusting the screw end connector. Might just need to replace the cable to fix it.

you might be able to trim a little of the housing at the carb box to get some slack on the cable not too much as long as you can adjust the slack out with the adjuster. Maybe an 1/8 or 1/4" is all you might need.

The ends are the crimped style so I guess I will have to resort to trimming the air box... When the idle is a little high if I tug on the cable toward the slider it lowers some. Could t be a need a stiffer slider spring?
