Hi all, I'm recently back into scootering after a 30 year absense after my wife bought me a 1978 sprint. Now looking at a second scoot and have 2 in my sights. A 79 p150 or a 2002 px200. Both pretty low mileage . Heart says purity of a mk1, but its a 150, head says grab one of the last 200,s. Any suggestions ?

Why would you even consider the 150? 200 is faster and has more torque and has a disc brake on the front. Btw welcome and post on the Not So Modern side for your scoots.

I think he's got some angst over the relative newness of the PX200. I'd say let that angst go and grab that 200 - displacement wins.

Go for the 200. If you've already got a 78 Sprint, you've got your more classic slow-rider. Add a 200 to the stable and you've got a more practical daily commuter or long distance runner. You'd essentially have the best of both worlds.

Ok let me throw this in the mix, the 150 is about £900 and the p200 £1700. If I went with the p150, there would be enough change to replace the engine with a rebuilt 200' the then redundant p150 engine with only 6k on could be handed down onto the sprint. But that being said, the 150 being 37 years old would need some cash spent on it through age alone, new cables, new rubber etc. where the p200' will probably need less. I am learning towards the 200 though

Thanks. Andy

Yeh, I didn't mention the disc brake, To me IMHO. The mk1 is and looks like the final evolution of the rally. Where the px's of this century are an evolution again and have lost some of that connection. It maybe the more pointy headset/ horn cover, the lustrous standard colours or the change in the front hub to accommodate the disc . If the option was a p200e 78 or px200 02. The p200e would win every time. That's the heart thing. When I was last into scooters, p range was acceptable because it predated us..(only way to get to the runs) the PK was not, and everyone smirked at the mk1 T5 with its very 80's (dynasty shoulder pad) angular back .. Obviously I may appear to be Luddite in these respects. I know the later px has the same frame shape and panels as the mk1' so it is only the headset and the sticky up Wing mirrors that seem to adorn all newer models that really make any difference..

Is this a case of the emporors new cloths, am I seeing things that are not there purely because it's newer. Very possibly..

I know what you mean but it's not hard to swap most of those things out. I changed the mirrors and got rid of the foam seat for a sprung one. The benefit of the front disc outweighs the hub's fugliness.

there is a few things that can be done to make that 150 faster than a stock 200 and not that expensive either

I think most would agree that a pre 83 P series is more desirable than a post 2000 PX from a frame/body perspective, but the responses you're getting all point to the 200 motor being the one to have. The disc brake is neither here nor there IMHO, given that I've always relied heavily on the rear brake and never really take advantage of the disc's superiority on my PX.

Go with your heart and buy the MK1 if it's in decent condition. You can improve the performance in a number of ways, including buying a 200 engine.

Why not just put a 200 engine in the Sprint? All the good looks of a '70s Vespa with the power of a Rally/PX200.

p 200 in the sprint... now there's an idea....

its the little touches I prefer, things like external panel locks rather than under seat, yes you can have your panels nicked, but not an issue, it worked for 35 years before that.

mixing my own oil, seems more authentic...

no mirror bosses on the top of the headset.

speedo in MPH

anyway both finish on eBay today. I have cash ready for either...

Now a proud owner of a 79 p150x. I outbid the others in the last 5 seconds.. Finally come to the decision, by asking my wife. And her answer was... That I'd have more fun and scope with the older one, the 200 was to new looking and so I wouldn't really tinker with it. She knows me best. Now anyone have a non auto lube p200 engine for sale or a set of cases in th UK ?

I'd choose the earlier style myself, but now kick myself seeing how rare P200 engines are, I practicLly gave one away 6mos ago, but today I just made that back!

Have fun with your scoot,,

Can we turn this into a random P200 dilemma thread??

Like is there side glove box for the P200 instead of a battery/ tire cover??

PX200 engine on eBay UK. Starting bid £400. Gulp, that's what an entire scooter cost not so long ago.

Yes sir! Still a fine looking scoot after all those years. Looks to be in well cared for condition.

Yes, it seems like a lot. Until you spend the same or more to get similar power from your 150. A decent kit, a good pipe, bigger carb & likely a stronger clutch will easily top 400. Then add labor and the fact that you won't have a working spare motor if you goof up anywhere tuning it up...

Just ride it for a while and if you find you need more power, keep your eye out for a cheaper 200 motor if you pass on this one. 400 doesn't sound bad, but who knows how healthy it is or what you might need to spend on it.

Re a 200 engine you may strike lucky if you phone a shop called Buzz Solo in Halifax. He does a trip into europe now and again and brings a van full of alsorts back.
