Modern Vespa

My exhaust broke at the pipe/exhaust can junction.

This exhaust was welded solid last year to get around the gasget problem.

It started leaking slowly but broke completely thru comming home from Amerivespa in Seattle.

Since the pipe is stainless I had to upgrade the welder to do this repair. This was my first attempt at welding with stainless.....

I tacked the two parts together while still on the bike to assure alignment.

Works great so far.....no leaks!

more heat and a little more wire speed.

don't grind after welding, it weakens the weld.

Is the pipe really stainless? why bother painting it?

So says my machinist friend.....and I belive him......

The weld I did at the gasget with regular mild steel welding wire looks fine for now.....but I am told it is a weak point now because I did not use the proper filler material........live and leard.

I wanna TIG box.......

(and welding lessons too I would add)........

I heard the headpipe is made of titanium. Urban legend perhaps, but probably more heat resistant than stainless. Who knows?

My pipe gets so hot, the paint (at nearly 5000 miles) smokes on the silencer near that joint sometimes. Where's that LeoVince 4Road?

I could give some lessons cover the consumables, have some material, feed me and I'll get you started in the right directions.

I might be getting another tig welder and the one I have now could be up for grabs.
