In the modern era it comes down to Pulp Fiction or Big Lebowski.

Uhhhh yeah. I'm gonna have to go and disagree with you there.
If you could just read the memo that Office Space is the movie of our time. You know what, I'll send you the memo again. So if you could go ahead and read that. That'd be great. |

Not sure if I would call it perfect, but the movie that surprised me the most and I liked recently was "What We Do In The Shadows". A great movie.

Pulp Fiction is a definite contender, but if we're going to include the Big Lew, then let's go ahead and throw in Reservoir Dogs and Fight Club, yeah?

Evidently, we have different sensibilities, but I like other movies by Tarantino and the Coen Brothers much better. I've never been able to understand how anyone prefers Pulp Fiction to Reservoir Dogs.

Gangster movie with a hip vibe, Pulp Fiction killed it. Reservoir Dogs is an honorable mention, by Tarantino also.
Might I suggest "Jackie Brown", also by Tarantino. As far a The Big Lobowski.........you see....I'm the dude.....what day is this? Edit-A lady at my bank is named Jackie Brown. Good lady. She loves the movie. ⚠️ Last edited by Trotter on UTC; edited 1 time

Well, define perfect.
I'd say something that just seamlessly works. Not necessarily the best, as the best art is often flawed in some way. It also has to touch on something deeper than the surface even if it seems simple at first seeing/hearing. And it stands the test of time - you can keep coming back to it and it holds up. Examples: Perfect movie: Moonstruck Perfect song: Will You Still Love Me Tomorrow, I Want to Hold Your Hand Perfect musical composition: second movement in Johann Sebastian Bach's Orchestral Suite No. 3 in D major, BWV 1068 ("Air on the G String"), Adagio for Strings by Samuel Barber |

I don't think you can have a perfect film, only a perfect film for a particular person in a particular mood. Pulp fiction is a great action film with great quotes but it doesn't really say anything. Lost in translation is simply a beautiful film. Office space is a great comedy that sums up modern life. Fight Club sums up almost everything. What we do in the shadows is a very good budget comedy - have you seen Four Lions?
Has anyone mentioned American Beauty and The Man from Earth or even The Eternal Beauty of the Spotless Mind? |

Pulp Fiction is certainly a great film. You happen across it on late night TV, you tell yourself you'll just watch a few scenes. But instead you end up watching it all the way through to the end for the umpteenth time.
Some good suggestions in this thread. For mainstream American cinema, No Country For Old Men comes to my mind. It's still among my top favourites of the last decade or so. But I agree with robinm, there's no 'perfect' film. I like an art-house film from time to time. Go watch Come and See. Once you experience a film as mighty as that, everything else looks like fluff. |

Res Dogs was a perfect movie. The dialog alone in the car, where the guy had to piss doing a handstand was priceless.
Another movie that was mentioned here was Moonstruck, perfection. Did anyone noticed the Lambretta in the Movie? |

Great movie, but I have lost all respect for the director. He portrays murder and jokes about "dead n****r storage" and now comes out against the police and now marching in Black lives matter demonstration. Total hypocrisy....all for violence where profit is concerned.
