My iphone is driving me nuts. It's been randomly dialing people numbers off my contact list. Wha? emoticon Their not people i've called lately (a few are) nor is my contact list open to that page when their called. It dialed a guy that rented a room from me 5yrs ago. I haven't called him and my contact list wasn't open to the C'S (name is Carl). The other day it called my 87yr old friend who i play board games with and my phone was sitting there charging in my bedroom. Now he was on top of my call list but the phone hadn't been touched.Forgot to bring it with me. Very strange and it's driving me nuts. What is even weirder is that the guy it called last nite is coming back to Hawaii in August (just got out of the military) to apply for a job here and we made plans to get together. That's even weirder. Does anybody else have this problem? It's the iphone 6+. TIA

May be worth hooking it up to iTunes on your computer & 'restoring' it. That should reset whatever is doing this...

I would go one step further and reset the phone to factory. Absolutely clean from scratch and then carefully reinstall all the apps, music and photos one by one. It's probably one of the apps you have doing something nasty.

Restoring it to factory would be my suggestion as well. Save your pictures locally though, I have had troubles retrieving pictures from the cloud

2 things spring to mind Judy.......

1. Have you read the book "Spirits in the Wires" by Charles de Lint?

2. synchronicity........

Personally I'd leave it be to continue ringing people to say hi whenever it gets bored and just see how it all develops. Laughing emoticon
You might want to get another phone until it figures out who it is though.

Regards,
Dave

Sure, Judy, your phone is random dialing now, but soon it will rise up and try to kill you. This is a sign. Razz emoticon Razz emoticon

Seriously, as others mentioned, a restore is not a bad idea.

Hi judy a couple of things, what model is it and how old. If it's a five or older and over two years in age I would suggest replacing, in my experience once an iPhone has reach two years it will generally start to play up and yes you can reboot reset do all of those things In my experience they are only ever temporary also how often do you update the software this also could be part of the problem😎

Just yesterday my iPhone 4 simply just stopped working, no reason, no warning, no nothing. The screen just went blank as is I'd turned it off. In a 'panic' as it's all I have to communicate with the outside world, I headed straight to the nearest a Apple Store. (about 30 miles away) All they did was plug it in and hold both buttons, 'home' and power, and all was well. I said "huh? I don't get it" it was that 're-boot' as earlier mentioned. Mind you, the phone is 3 and 1/2 years old, I've not had problem one before now.
All seems well with it at the moment, I'm writing this post on it. At least I can say I had 60+/- miles of 'saddle time' yesterday because of it and it was a nice day.....

Story with a happy ending - if mine ever does burp, now I've got an idea what to try, thanks!... Just updated it to the most recent iOS today...

+1 with the exception of the battery not lasting all day. I've purchased an external power source that charges the phone twice makes the phone last for 2 days before having to plug it in over night and charging the external power source at the same time.

I'm using a "Mophie" case with mine, which also acts as an additional battery. It can chew up some battery life, if you're doing much of anything with it (running apps, etc)...

I have a Lifeproof case on mine. I work outside rain or shine so the case protects from pretty much everything. I had good success with an Otter Box but water started to get between the phone screen and the screen protector of the case, even under my rain gear, which made the touch screen and ultimately the phone unusable. I decided to try this one to see how it lasts. I'll have had my 4S for 3 years come September.

I'm ready for an upgrade, small screen big thumbs 👍, but holding out for iOS 10 and iPhone 7 before final decision.

GCAT it's almost 3 years old and it's a 6+. AV how true. It's current up to date with everything. I usually upgrade as soon as see the prompts. Otherwise it bugs me until i do and then nothing works right until i do. Will try the restore. AV so true. MOD i'm tempted to leave it alone and see why it's calling certain people. If it hadn't called Carl i wouldn't of known he was coming out next month. I often wonder if the people are alright when it calls. There might be a reason it's calling people. I believe in weird stuff like that. It never did it before i did the last update. Maybe that's one of the glitches in the new upgrade? Thanks everyone.

As a rule of thumb, when an iPhone does anything strange it's time for the hard reset / reboot: hold down BOTH the power AND the home button. Nothing will happen. Then the screen will go black. CONTINUE holding until the Apple logo reappears. Then release the buttons.

If that doesn't cure it, then go through the pain of the factory restore routine.

Good luck!

iPhones are great, but not perfect.

Will do the hard reset/boot. It's sorta funny but i have a lot of east coast numbers on my phone and getting a call at midnight doesn't go over to well. Laughing emoticon My friend Carl is now living in VA and it was midnight when my phone called him. Fortunately he's a night owl and was up. It is sorta fun seeing who it's going to call next but if it starts dialing 911 i'm going to have a hard time explaining that one. Laughing emoticon

My carrier's app recommends that I reboot my iphone (5s) once a week to keep things running smoothly. It's the iOS version of a computer program that's been running long enough to start getting glitchy. Turn off, turn back on to let it load fresh.

If the hard reset/reboot doesn't fix things, then restore. If THAT doesn't fix it...take it to an apple store. Best of luck and fingers crossed that it's just needing a simple reboot.

Should the problem persist Judy, you may want to go the Apple store and have them do a debug. They have access to other diagnostic tools that a simple reboot may not fix.

A reboot is usually the best fix. A hard reset is a good option as well. But iPhones can flake out...mine has had a couple issues.

One other note, if you got it on release date, it's not quite two years old. They came out in September 2014!

For what it's worth...
I have made it a habit to pay some attention to my iPhone once a week, for me it is every Friday.

First all apps get closed, then I download any updates, after this it is ready to be turned off and back on again.

It just makes sense that some apps are only opened once or twice in a month, yet sit there semi-running in the background possibly sucking up resources. Better to turn them off once in a while. Why not do this while they are possibly being updated?

It also gives me a specific time to make sure that I've updated everything, and then powering it down and up again gives it a chance to put all those sub-routines back in place.

Thankfully I've never had trouble with any of my phones... knock wood.

Although I kinda like the idea that your phone is reaching out to those people you might have lost contact with. Not dialing the same numbers you've dialed recently... but instead going for those long-term folks.

I wonder who is next? Popcorn emoticon

SNOOK i know. In a weird way it's cool. If my phone hadn't called Carl i wouldn't of known he was coming back here next month for an interview. Ghosts in the machine as they say. I did the the reboot yesterday so we'll see if it works. So now i'm trying to figure out how my fridge magnet got over near my computer chair. The wind couldn't of done it and my roommate didn't come home that nite. We do have a ghost that lurks about on the property. 2 different tenants described the same lady and they didn't know one another. Nor did anybody tell them the story about her. Thanks everyone.

What's the story behind the lurking ghostly visitor Judy? Have you seen her? Tell us about her please.

There's a woman in 1800's clothing (missionary) that's been seen. My neighbors who lived in the condo that's attached to mine (we have 3 sets of duplexes) saw a woman walking towards the wall that divides our property from the neighbors property. They thought someone had dressed up for some unknown reason, until she walked thru the wall and came out onto our lawn. Fast forward a few years (they bought a house about a mile away) and Todd lived in the condo that i can see when i go down my steps. He was/is a Hell's Angel member from Ventura CA. About 8pm he comes running into my condo yelling something about ghosts. I played along and he tells me that he was sitting on his deck and this woman in missionary clothing came across the lawn (from next to me where she was seen by the other tenants) and then proceeded to go thru the other wall that separates us from our neighbors on the other side. They never met each other, nor did i tell him the story. Also, both sets of people saw a ball of light shoot by after the person was out of sight. Makes you wonder. The town i live him is rich with Hawaiian history. Hawaiian royalty lived out here and battles with Kings from the other islands we fought a few miles away.
