I have a vespa GTS 2007 that has stalling problems when hot. Also feels boggy occasionally, but, again, only when hot. When it stalls out it keeps running until the RPMs go down, but barely and with no rev, until it stalls. It only starts up again after 5+ mins when cool. If I hit the throttle too hard right after this it stalls again and I have to wait another 5+ minutes. If the temp is 80+ degrees itll happen. If its 70 or so, like when I go to work in the am, it never happens.

It seems like a common issue but, unfortunately, the 2007 models were not part of the recall.

So, I am looking for a tutorial on how to get at and replace the fuel pump. Seems like I have to drop the gas tank and to do that I probably have to drop the engine. I have the Haynes manual but surprisingly haven't found any tutorial online.

Can anyone assist?

Thanks in advance,

Josh

This is Cheeky Thomas' fuel-pump replacement tutorial for the GTS. We found it very clear and helpful.

http://cheekythoma3.wix.com/itsme#!fuelpump/c1wml

(please copy and paste the whole link above, as I can't get the entire URL to come up as a link, sorry).

Thanks a bunch. The Cheeky Thomas one makes it sound totally doable. With that and the Haynes and the youtube I should have enough info. First off, Im gonna call the dealer to ask about a recall (just in case). I need to order the fuel pump itself too. The ebay one is for a 125 but I found the one for a 250gts like mine there.

Here it is
http://r.ebay.com/9H5HoN

It's only 42 bucks. Scooterwest charges 320 for vespa brand and scooterpartsco charges 200 for OEM. There's a big difference here! Big question is, how high do I have to go for peace of mind?

Yamaha uses this same 30mm pump in everything from the new 50cc Zuma up to its 500cc Tmax. I've installed two of them in different C3s. One is still going strong after 6,000 miles, the other has 4,000 miles. I looked for good seller feedback with lifetime warranty. They're for sale with reviews on Amazon as well.

The Piaggio fuel pump includes the whole pump housing as well. As this is a Piaggio specific housing, the costs are far greater than just for the more generic working bits inside.

$42 sounds fine to me, provided you're confident you can open up the old housing and exchange the innards.

At least on Yamahas the nylon housing is fairly tough. It takes a little finesse with small awls to get the pump out of the housing. I always liked this idea better than paying for a replacement housing I didn't need to begin with.

OEM and Vespa brand are the same part, in the same pretty blue box. Keep in mind that Piaggio didn't actually make any of these pumps.
One thing I've noticed about aftermarket pumps where you just buy the pump and not the other parts, is that there are a lot of them out there for the 300, but I haven't been able to track one down to replace the pump in the 250. Maybe the one in China will work, and if it doesn't, you can probably ship it back at your expense to China and get your money back. That's gotta be cheap and convenient, right?

Here's one for the 250 than you can get by July 7th. Not everyone can afford to pay the hyper inflated prices for Piaggio replacement parts. If you can get your scooter back on the road without it costing you a week's pay, more power to you!

And here's the description- "PIAGGIO VESPA GTS250 GTS 250 BEVERLY 2006-2012: NOTE: SOME MODELS MIGHT NEED MODIFICATIONS"

What modifications might it need to put on a 2012 Vespa GTS250?

I got a small clamp from the local repairman so ill cut the hose and clamp it with that. I broke the external hoses too so i had to pay 70 bucks to replace those. Ouch. Seems like i make a 50-70 dollar mistake every time i open er up. Doh! But itd be 600 to let the dealer replace the pump!

So I cut and clamped that little internal fuel pump hose, put it back together and have been riding it without incident. Cheeky's guide was the best and I went step by step with that for the repair.

I made a lift out of wood that I'll share in a seperate thread that was key to keeping costs down and still doing the work safely. I have no real expertise. This was the biggest job I've done to date!

For all of those people that want to do the extra work required in the video, great!

BUT this is all I had to do to get the tank out.

I just saw this 4 year old thread being revived. Mad props to you feha for diving in head first. Anyone with a pulse and a creditcard can wheel it into the shop for repairs. It is a great feeling when you can fix what you ride.

A picture is worth a 1000 words.

Get the bike up to the height I'm at in the picture. Make sure to disconnect the spark plug wire at the plug. Remote the exhaust and muffler mount. Remove the rear shocks which will lower the engine down on the rear wheel. Unbolt the tank, and it will basically fall out.

Happy to answer any questions. 🛵

Hi all - just used this thread to replace my 2007 GTS 250 ie fuel pump.

The cheeky Thomas guide was invaluable but I ran into a couple of problems.

I couldn't get the rearmost screw out of the air box so had limited ability to move the left shock to create enough clearance to get the tank out. The clip and the end of the nut were too corroded and the clip broke so the screw couldn't be backed out.

Anyway, I improvised and believe it or not managed to get the tank lowered enough to replace the pump while the tank was still in the bike. Took a little coaxing but it worked.

My problem? Now I can't get the tank into place. There's just no way I can fit the front of the tank back forward enough to get the filler up and in place. It's stuck about a filler width too far back and no matter what I try I can't get it to pop in place.

Does anyone have any ideas or thoughts??

**UPDATE**

Figured out that if I lowered the bike back down a bit, popped the shocks back forward and into normal position it freed up enough space to get the tank up, forward and in place. Wasn't that hard after I spent about an hour ready to kill myself. After that it was smooth sailing and the best part - the bike started up immediately after I threw some gas in and hit the button!!

I'm liking this manufacturer for in tank pumps these days: https://www.ebay.com/itm/332694518180?fits=Make%3AVespa&hash=item4d762379a4:g:HSAAAOSwPRlXnARh I had two Caltric pumps fail on my Burgman back to back with less than 800 miles on each. 30mm, this fits Vespa.

Slacker.
The factory allocates 45 minutes for this repair.
I've never met a technician who can do it that fast.

I actually think I **could** do it that fast, if I ever had to do it again AND if there weren't any seized screws or nuts to deal with!

Here's some data on aftermarket fuel pumps you can get on ebay. I'll be happy to add any new ones if you want to send it to me or measure the same things.

There are differences!

https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/19Y1-DFdW6b8TRAamb_JsNLoCjNcLzuCYLNH4a2Lxg80/edit?usp=sharing

I wish I had kept the OEM pump to compare. Measuring them under 2-2.5 bar load would have been nice too.

I slapped the quantum in my BV250 and called it a day. Would have been fine with the Kemso. FWIW I rode the cannonball in '21 with a Caltric and didn't have any fuel issues.
