Is there something wrong with the followride site. I cannot seem to get the rider's positions to load. The map and weather overlay comes up, but not the rider positions.

You can see the individual riders but there is a problem with viewing everyone. Feb31st said he'll kick the server when he gets home. In the meantime more parking lot wrenching going on.

After a quiet afternoon, we are turning in scores now. Will know something soon, but my guess is flyguy2 stretched his lead. I rode as fast as I could but only beat his raw time by a few minutes. The Smax combination of speed and handicap can't be beat. Very good rider too.
Bigkart got stopped by a state trooper one block from the hotel. He and that helix are a perfect pair. |

BigKart's run in with the law helped loosen up 2nd. If BigKart skips the hotel coffee and doesn't need to stop and go wee wee... and carries enough aux fuel he can probably hold off Bill just enough but it will be very close. FlyGuy & Bill both need perfect execution over the next 5 days. No clue what could happen today since its the first day of elevation changes. In past Cannonballs long slow climb days have been dogs burning head scratching amounts of fuel and wear down top end just enough. The route starts today at 2600ft. The first 100 miles is a slow 1200 ft climb, then a 80 mile coast back down to near starting level and then a 3300ft climb over 70 miles to hit a max elevation of 5900, https://goo.gl/maps/k1N99dSsZe22 -- then a leisurely slide down to 4600 to end the day.

Quote: 3300ft climb over 70 miles to hit a max elevation of 5900 Have to keep in mind that in 2014 a 108cc Honda Elite with 6.9 lbs-ft torque at 6250 RPM accumulated the most points. Noticed the standings page has been updated through day 6. Excellent job by those doing this . . your efforts are much appreciated! |

I kept a quick spreadsheet using the nearest GPS check-ins on a few riders going through the elevation climb between Red Shirt and Check Point 3...
From my math... Rider Red Shirt CHK 3 Miles Minutes AVG MPH ADJ AVG MPH ClassicRider has a 97% handicap, so it he is close enough to the baseline scooter... assuming both he and Bill were both competitively riding through this stretch would suggest that the handicap adjust is accurate?

CD - do you find your experience with steep grades and mountain riding paying off during this race? Or does it all basically even out? Can you see various riders different skills sets? Just curious. |

It was rider numbe 24 bman on Kymco Yager GT200i that came in on a truck.
Belkwinith there are better mountain riders, aka folks who really like and push it in the twisties than I do on this cannonball. There are skill set differences but they mostly show up in the technical riding stretches if the scoot they are riding can take advantage. Today with the combination of increasing elevation, strong winds and some tight twisties it probably came down more to what you were riding since even the best rider would be limited by their scoot. Bill and Matt both said they dropped to 30 at one point. I think I managed to stay in the upper 30s on the grades but where I'd normally run 82-83 when I took I-90 shortcut to the hotel I never managed over the low 70ss. Bill said he was mostly at 55 with the occasional 60. That makes John - Classic Rider's average speed exceptionally good especially for carb'd vintage. John has been having an amazing cannonball so far. Matt 4in6iscool decided he wanted to see Devil's Tower so he headed out after his final cannonball checkin. He's leaving his spot on so you should see him way off the route on followride. |

Enjoyed meeting the Cannonball 2016 riders and teams- hope you didn't run into as many gravel roads as we did riding down from Kansas City. Lots of closed roads. It was worth it to see everyone, Capt Gary most of all!

Two more of my favourite people right there.
I'd like to tell you how kind they are. 1 Mark offered to organise a ride for me for this years Cannonball that I sadly had to decline. 2 Matt, who after he'd finished the Cannonball 2014 joined me for an Ironbutt to Dave's place then rode on New York, to then turn a round to pick me up from Pennsylvania to take me back to Newark Airport. Amazing People. Bill xxx

We'll just have to wait and see!flyguy2 2011 Wleuthold 1994 Classic Rider 1939 Motovista 1867 cdwise 1822 Leigh Rau had a great picture on Facebook of the dirt road section from yesterday @ http://bit.ly/29y0Wo1 - not sure how many riders took it but there is another dirt road section tomorrow on day 9. Today is the longest day - 380 miles with a climb to 9000ft between checkpoints 1 and 2. More specifically the climb is between Ranchester, WY and Lovell, WY - https://goo.gl/maps/rZz56PR1Mam The weather forecast at the peak calls for light winds but temperatures 44'F at 9AM with a high of 54'F at 3PM. You guys and gals are racking up the miles.
I can't go 90 miles without my lower back and butt hurting me. I think the most I did in one day was 150 miles (lightweight!). Anyone got some recommendations regarding how to NOT cripple yourself as you do this? ie. Back support, or how you ride? |
