Last night I decided to replace the speedo cable on my g.t.r. since the speedo was not working.

I successfully replaced both outer and inner cables.

I attached them to the speedometer, with no problem, but I couldn't figure out how to attach them to the hub side.

I decided to have a better look and I took the speedo drive gear down.

The drive gear ends with a round section, slightly smaller than the square section of the new inner cable.

Isn't the inner cable supposed to sit in the drive gear? It does not fit!

I checked and made sure that the drive gear rotates with the wheel and that by manually rotating the inner cable at the bottom end, the speedometer works, so now the cable to drive gear connection is the only thing I'm missing.

The speedo cable replacement I got is sold for Super, Sprint and Rally, so it should work on my g.t.r.

What am I doing wrong?

You can check your old cable and see if it fits into the drive. If it does, you may have the wrong size inner.

The old inner seems to get round and thinner at the very bottom end, but it's hard to tell, since it's very wornice out.
The new inner fits perfectly into the speedo, plus it is sold for my specific model so I assumed I have the correct one.

How many teeth on your speedo gear drive. You should have 9. If you have 10, then you have the wrong speedo drive...which may have been your problem all along.

SOLVED.

I had the wrong speedo drive gear. It had the same amount of teeth, but the hole hosting the end of the inner cable was smaller.

When I got the Vespa the speedo was working, but stopped after few days. I think someone in the previous ownership replaced the drive gear with the wrong one and managed to modify the old cable to fit temporarily.
