20/20 with these jets

Timing set to 18° Btdc

Hard starting, will only start with wide open throttle.
Boggy and four stroking like its rich...

Timing issue?

It seems like it's rich. Haven't gone above half throttle, but that pilot jet seems towards the leaner end...
Mix screw about 1 1/2 out.

Points gapped at .38

Plug is a B8

Had to elongate slots in stator quite a ways to get to 18°

Seemed excessive to me, but it's the first time I've had to do it...

Rechecked timing...

I don't know what happened, but it was way off.

So I set it again, and it was a bit better, but it still is hard starting...
Had to kick it with wide open throttle. It's a bit faster, but still seems like 4stroking...

Hey i got the same set up, i got no idea what the time etc is but it takes 10 kicks from cold every time to get her going. One kick when warm.

You've said a couple of times you think it's rich...try smaller idle as per SoCal's suggestion and take the main down a couple of points.
Have you got the original mesh filter on the carb, and is the heart-shaped hole drilled out? That might also help
