Great article. Part of the story is about parking garages not allowing two wheeled vehicles. Is there any reasonable justification why that is not allowed? I've had an occasion where I wasn't allowed in one in downtown Atlanta. In that case, I was ready, willing and fully able to pay for a space but I was refused. A second occasion I've run into seemingly arbitrary prejudice against a two wheeler was in a public outdoor lot (no fee) at a public event where I was ticketed for being in a space meant for a four wheeled vehicle.
I don't understand any distinction between two and four wheels when I pay my tag fees and drive on the same roads with all of the same rules as cars. |

I understand the desire to use limited parking space efficiently. I always attempt to park in a space that is not suitable for a larger vehicle or share my space with other bikes. Seems like it is really an argument for local jurisdictions and parking facilities to designate more motorcycle/scooter parking.

C'mon Portland. Lead the way. Incentivize two wheelers with more two wheeled friendly parking.

Mayor Rick Grey of Lancaster Pa is a scooterist, Lancaster City has free scooter at one parking garage near the city offices.

Santa Fe NM has a few designated parking spots for bikes around the downtown and Railyard areas. A couple of the city lots have spaces for bikes as well. As long as we pay the meters city doesnt hassle about parking in designated spots. Guess we are lucky!

Advantages to small towns
I am glad I live in a small town where bike/scooter parking is not an issue. The law might hassle for speed, like 'too slow' to be on highway but legally, in IL, the minimum speed HAS to be posted for it to be illegal to run a small scooter or motorized bicycle on highways here. And we don't get bugged about where we park, ribbed about not riding a Harley, yes, but that has never bothered me. I just comment on my mpg and ask what they get.

I wish all cities would have officials riding scoots/motorbikes like this. It would benefit us all. |
