I've just installed the Malossi Multivar 2000 (variator) on a 2013 GTS 300 i.e. It's a fairly new engine with about 350 miles on it so far. Right now it has the 14 gram roller weights. On a level street, it performs nicely, but when I'm going up mountain roads, especially at slower speeds, it's very "revvy" at around 20-30 MPH and the engine is heating up, with engine temp moving up (but below the red) and kicking in the cooling fan until I'm level again.

One Vespa dealer suggests that I increase the weights to 15 grams and another suggests using the lighter 13 gram roller weights. Which way to go? It would be great to hear some feedback from those of you who have some experience with this.

Regardless of what variator you go with you need a good tachometer to select the right weight rollers and it's a trial and error process so buy a selection.

In order to get maximum acceleration you want the engine to be running at the RPM where it generates max power. if it's higher than that go to a heavier roller, if it's lower than that go to lighter.

The runs should be from about 15-55mph to assure you are in the working range of the variator and should be at wide open throttle. Below 15mph the clutch is mostly calling the shots, above 55 the variator is mostly maxed out and it's the speed just rises in proportion to the RPMs.
