I thought I'd check up on what it says in the highway code for roundabouts. I was genuinely interested in whether I was wrong. The Highway Code says keep left lane for 1st exit, right lane for last exit, and the 'appropriate' lane for intermediate exits. There are two lanes on the exit so either lane is more than fine for going straight on. Which highway code are you using?

I have a round about that the left lane goes only left, while the right lane can be used to go either right or straight....Do you know how many people will crowd out a scooter, to cut him off, in the left lane to go straight? Plenty, and most don't care! Only when I have my big pickup, I will hold my lane.....happens almost every time I go through there with traffic.....and the round about is not new, been there for 5 years now!

In the US, if I'm turning right, it's fine, but if I'm going left or straight ahead, sometimes I just feel like I need to close my eyes and go for it If two arrive at same time, car on right has right away. Car going straight ahead has right of way over car turning left. |

Sadly I can only understand parts of what you write.
If it was me, and I'd insulted someone and was then shown to be completely in the wrong, then I'd of just gone for a simple apology. YMMV |

I could try explaining again but something tells me I'd just be wasting my time.
Perhaps it might be worth going further than compulsory basic training? |

Traffic-circles/roundabouts appear to be a good deal more popular in New Jersey than in my native New York: as a cyclist, I've almost always liked, and as a scooterist I've come to like them even more, although the ones I've recently encountered in my neck of NJ are of the smaller variety (which seems to be the norm in the States). One advantage of smaller roundabouts, IMO, is that I can assess traffic flow in a narrower visual "sweep" than I might in a more Euro-sized circle. Also, most motorists I've observed tend to enter roundabouts in a fairly sober and predictable manner. (And, this in a state whose drivers, let's just say, don't have a rep for either courtesy or patience.)
On the other hand: there are five four-way intersections in town that are downright treacherous, equipped either with semi-obscure Stop signs or, just about as bad, a single, flashing signal (red or yellow, depending on direction), and, just to add that extra frisson of excitement, these run parallel to a pair of very active railroad tracks, with crossings every few blocks. On top of all this, no two intersections are alike in terms of controls - the first has Stop signs, the next has the single flashing signal, the one after this has a standard traffic light...it's downright amazing we haven't had any more fender-benders than we do. |
