Hi everyone,

I finally got my '66 smallstate running and the only thing standing between me and the open road is getting the rear brake shoes to fit.

It's been quite the saga. First, I was sold the wrong brake shoes. They were for P series scooters and therefore too big for the posts to come out. I then ordered them online and they specifically said they were for VMA1. They fit or at least they look like they do.

The hub fits so tight that it wont just go on. Also you cant get it back off if you force it on. That's how I broke the little piece off of the backing plate.

This is the last thing I need to fix before I can ride it. Any suggestions about what this is happening or how to fix it would be appreciated

The new brake pads look correct and are thick enough that the hub is having a hard time going on around them. As long as the inside of the hub is clean and smooth I'd take some material off the brake pads until a good fit is achieved.

As far as the inside of the hub goes I took off the rust with sandpaper prior to attempting to install it. What is the preferred tool for removing material from the pads?

I don't know if there's a preferred tool but a flat file or rough sandpaper in a sanding block come to mind. Compare the old ones to the new ones to see how much material needs to come off and then clean everything with brake cleaner before final install.
