I replaced the upper and lower bearing races on the GL yesterday, along with new bearings. That was pretty easy.

I also tried to fix a bent fork stop and that was not-so-easy. Ultimately, that one got the best of me. I guess I'll just deal with having no right turn fork stop. It's been that way for a while, I just hoped I'd get it fixed while I had the fork out.

Win some. Lose some.

Tried to fill gear oil in a 125 Allstate motor that hasn't run for forever. Fill bolt was just spinning. I put a pliers on it and exerted up pressure but no luck. I resorted to gently prying upwards with a screwdriver while turning with a wrench or pliers and eventually extracted the filler bolt.
I ordered a 10m x 125 tap and corresponding drill bit and also a 10m oil drain bolt.

Congratulations on getting the bolt out. Hope the fill port augmentation is equally successful!

I did that once and used a M10 oil drain plug…then promptly regretted it. A few months later i ended up welding the hole shut and drill and tapped it back to a M8.
A M8 timesert kit would be the perfect solution for a stripped out drain plug.

Another scooter followed me home! Again?! I'm not sure how this keeps happening?!?…

Nice lil Allstate, made it home to the shop. I picked this up in Southern Oregon, while on my way home from a business trip. Timing was perfect for this being listed, and me being able to pickup enroute home.

Mostly complete. Solid rust/rot free, other than obvious surface rust. Engine turns free, but top end has been removed and the crank-rod is bent. Piston-Ported 125, so its not exactly a hot rodder. lol Not sure the plan here, but I have thoughts

I now have thoughts TOO! I'm thinking about the same old piston ported motors, mostly intact, that I got cheap and you NEED to do justice properly refurbishing this important historical Vespa 'AllState' icon. Did I mention cheap?

Look how nicely that scoot fits in there! I think you have a problem with your garage though. It's really clean and you can actually move around in it.

The only reason I don't have one is because I keep passing on them as people I know move them along.

Also, I don't think it's possible to both retain the true Allstate Vibe (e.g. pogo stick front fork) and still do a good resto-mod project on it.

I have 2, Bear has the Vespa fork, Bluey doesn't. Bluey is the resto mod. Pinasco 177, sip road 2, vape 12v etc. I actually like the softness of the ride with the pogo fork more than the one with the dampner

Regarding the '58 plate. if there is any paperwork that has that plate number and the VIN (title or registration or even a parking ticket) it should be saved as it can be used to reassign the plate to the bike if it ever comes back to California. Without that paperwork it can still be used through the "year of manufacturer plate" option, but there is an extra fee for that.

Allstate Crew assemble!!

I'm very happy with this find! Mild resto mod would be by ideal plan. I have a motor I could swap in, instead of the Piston-Port 125. I also have a damper link & fork I can swap over. Purists look away!

The plate is actually a 56, with the last tag being 58. Interesting, as this should be a 1958 model…. early import? Plate swapped? IDK. No paperwork unfortunatley, but I can work with that.

Amerivespa would be rad for everyone to meet up! I've already booked a room at the host hotel

I could have this wrong but I think California use to issue new plates each year/ every few years.

I would have expected a 58 would be a 56 plate with a 58 sticker, but it looks like there is another sticker under it.

Interesting. There are 2 stickers. Closer inspection looks like the top one is actually a 59, but its hard to read. So I'm assuming the one underneath is 58, or earlier.

that would track. I've seen '56 plates with '62 sticker, so looks like it was used till they issued the black plates in 63.

Ok, so if I understand what You're saying, a 56 plate could have been first issued for a number of years from 56 onward, until the next year plate was created. I always thought that a new plate was created for each year of manufacture. Perhaps its different for car plates and motorcycle plates.

What came out of the tank. This fuel probably dates to November '22.

A closer look. Maybe sediment from the filling station tanks?

I came across this photo today while sorting through scrapbook stuff.

Early 90's. A friend bought it from a friend's dad. We picked it up in my bus. I got it started by rolling down a hill in 2nd until it started. Bone stock and well maintained.

My friend never learned to drive standard and couldn't get the hang of shifting. He asked me if shifting gears was really necessary (it was a 3 speed). It really wasn't for him and he ended up selling it. I wasn't interested in it at the time because I turned my nose up at small frames. I don't even know what model it was.

Ha! Just you wait until you get to Dave! (I started cleaning it actually, so some of the weight is lifted.) But, there is no fuckery as miserable as the one-piece, metal, gas/oil tanks from the mid 70's Vespa line. In fact, may I suggest some quality beer and/or xanax before you start. Keep your therapists number on speed dial, and do not buy any dynamite until the job is complete.

Godspeed.

Oh... and protip - buy like half a dozen oil sight glasses to have on hand when you install the tank. You'll break at least 2 (possibly 5 or 6) trying to get the tank home. It's a feature.

Oh, isn't this bullshit the truth, though.

If I ever install a tank that doesn't already have oil in it, I wait until after it's installed to screw on the sight glass. I'm convinced that's how they must have done it from the factory.

NSR.... Can anyone scan a small object and send me a model file to print? It's the short plastic cap that comes on some dairy product cartons. Most versions of this spout and cap are 1/2" high and the one I need is 3/8". I can give you the name of a couple of products that use this cap. I'll gladly cover the cost of a carton and your time. PM me for more detail. Thanks.

Oh, isn't this bullshit the truth, though.

If I ever install a tank that doesn't already have oil in it, I wait until after it's installed to screw on the sight glass. I'm convinced that's how they must have done it from the factory.

I never thought about doing it that way. And I thought it was only me who scraped up or cracked those things. It never goes in straight or the same way twice.

I've never been able to fit the glass through the frame after installing the tanks on a mid 70's. Granted, I have only tried once. But seemed like there was zero chance. (Will try again when/if I get to the rally)

Moving a couple of modern fossils from my buddy's old house to the shop. '84 Riva 80 and an '89 "Riva" Zuma. Yes, the early Zumas were marked as Rivas.

Both are dried-up turds, but I'll give 'em a fair shake when time permits.
