Changed the rear brake shoes on a friend's P and installed a pair of 300g bar end weights (with handmade dilators) with the newer Vespa grips. I lifted him up to tighten the rear brake cable to his liking and left him up there for 5 minutes

Not today, but last sunday....

I went on a lovely 120-ish mile tour around Loudoun County VA, where I came to the conclusion that I should not feel bad about not stopping to take pics of the places I find and get to see, because if I did, it would distract me from taking in the view and truly enjoying the ride. I value that time alone inside the helmet and pushing that peely, scaly, P series down the road. It is MY time. It's not for anyone else, and stopping to take photos makes the ride about someone else and showing them the pics. I am going to keep these memories and images for ME. It's OK to be selfish sometimes.

Along the way, I found myself feeling really bad about my 2T oil situation. With my local bike shop shutting down in June, I am without a place to buy my usual oil brands, Amsoil Dominator, or failing that, the Maxima Super M Injector. I realized I had almost NO oil left in the tank while mid ride. It didn't even show in the sight glass when parked with the nose down hill. So, I pull into the closest Autozone and go with the best I can find in a quart on the shelf, Valvoline.
I pop the cap and look inside. This stuff is opaque. It smells like rotting fish. As I watch it dribble down the filler tube for the oil tank, I say a tiny prayer that it won't gunk up when it hits the remaining good oil in the bottom. The usually bright red, transparent, and happy looking sight glass became a dark, opaque, blue/black like the lividity of a corpse. I stashed the now 3/4 drained jug of oil in the glove box and gave her a kick. Of course she started just like normal. I went on my merry way, whipping that franken-motor within an inch of its life....which is exactly what happens with a 5 port 150 top end on p125 gears when tucked in at about 60 mph and two fingers on the clutch hoping it doesn't decide to bite you in the ass...... Laughing emoticon

I also decided to add a case of Dominator to my Christmas list. Nerd emoticon

First proper run!
Finally took the LML on a long(ish) run to the Bridlington national rally. About 130ish miles round trip and it made it!!! Had a rear tyre blow out on the way home, had to lay the scooter on its side to change the wheel, forgot to turn fuel off n flooded the engine, got it started eventually! Learned that 4th gear is pretty much useless unless on the flat or down hill with no head wind! Very windy on the way home so ended up pretty much thrashing it at full throttle in 3rd! Had a blast tho n enjoyed every minute!!!! 😊

Went to go take the scoot to work and snapped the clutch cable right at the nipple on the lever. Looks like it's time for baby's first clutch cable change.

You should look closely and figure out why it snapped. It should be pretty much a straight pull and the cable shouldn't bend.

I just got the new cable today so I'll give it a try tomorrow. I don't remember the last time it was changed, and it sat outside for awhile, so I'm going to go with neglect being the reason. But I'll take a closer look tomorrow.

Riding down the highway and suddenly performance was terrible. I was unable to rev above 4k. I Checked the plug and it was white. So .... check for air leaks.

The carb rubber between my carb and reed manifold had a small tear in it allowing air in. Tear was caused by the carb hitting the frame.

Mikuni TMX is too tall a carb for a PX really. I have angled the carb a little to stop it knocking against the frame. Don't want to buy another carb (should have bought the Keihin) you live and learn.

Today, I slept all day because I picked up some sort of nasty flu last week while I was down in South America, but now I feel well enough to surf the web.

While I was there (Ascuncion, Paraguay), I saw the Vespa dealer, but we just drove past it going to a meeting. While there are a million little tiny almost-moped motorcycles, I saw almost no scooters.

I also changed out the reeds on the Stella, which finally resolved the can't breathe problem from a year ago. Why I didn't do it as part of the last engine rebuild, I honestly just can't say.

On the VBB, I finished cleaning up the electrical after the swap to the LML motor and converted it to all LED a couple weeks ago. Nice, bright lights, which is good since we're starting to get noticeably shorter days. I need to sort out the speedo, which is completely non-functional due to me ordering the wrong cable, but I had it out over the weekend to run some errands and while it's not as fast as the Stella, it's still a fun little ride on 8's. Only real problem is that the pipe hits the ground on hard left turns.

It has a repop speedo that my father-in-law put in it, probably from scooterworks, and a VBB cable is the wrong size to attach the outer to the speedo itself. Irritatingly, I can't find a spec for the size of that attachment collar on any parts sites, only the size of the inner cable ends. grrr...

I'm more of an angle grinder guy, myself, when it comes to cutting motors out of frames. I've now done it twice, once on the Stella and once on the VBB. It's not the most fun you'll ever have wrenching on a scooter, for sure.

When I rebuilt the VBB, I pretty much packed the swingarm tube with marine (salt-proof) grease, but even that wasn't enough to keep it from rusting it to death.

I like blow torches & hammers.

I use "rust converter " (goes on WHITE, turns BLUE, dries BLACK) for all rust, & simply pour 1/3 to 1/2 cup into the tunnel on floor, then move the frame till it's all coated... A 'rag on a stick' is helpful, plus camera phones take great pics in tight spaces

Don't think I didn't start with a blowtorch & hammer, but that swingarm bolt was not coming out, even with a week of PB Blaster, hammering, blowtorches, and a whole lot of bad language.

i still need to get the bolt out of the motor, but since I'm running my 8" conversion LML in the VBB now, I'm in no real hurry to get that rebuild going.

I'd been spritzing it with PB'laster for the past week in preparation. The bolt was solidly seized inside the bushing tube. Only reason there are two saws out is one was dead. I damaged the body even more trying to drive the bolt out.

Whole reason for removing the engine is in had to come to terms with how rusty the body is as the better I got the engine running the more it twisted and leaned. Both holes are oval and cracking.

Still not going restoration but it's going to get some serious structural repairs.

SAW Fu$*ing Snow faling...
Dammit...just 2 days ago it was like around 60 and I blasted all over town feeling so happy I got my Malossi 210 engine's tranny all rebuilt after a failure of my xmas tree. Just feeling pissed and a bit sad that good scooting weather is most likely over for the year here.,.. Time to move onto some projects I've had simmering...

From the looks of it that had already been done. :/ I almost punched a hole in the side of the body trying to drive the bolt out. A pusher that looks like a giant c-clamp would be useful for bikes that one doesn't want to roll upside down and wail on wih a hammer. Maybe a modified pipe clamp?
Last night the chassis went with a friend who is a fabricator. He just bought some new sand blasting cabinet and wants to show it off. I painted bright yellow on all the areas I want to be able to see through the body filler and rust and we got to discussing repair plans. If I run with his ideas it'll be heavy but it will not break and will be able to take whatever engine I chose to wedge in there.

I had it out over the weekend to run some errands and while it's not as fast as the Stella, it's still a fun little ride on 8's. Only real problem is that the pipe hits the ground on hard left turns.

I know what you mean. What pipe are you using?

It's a knock-off JL leftie. Looks like it should clear, but...nope...

Today I added a leg shield mirror and nailed the placement on the first shot. Hopefully I can do it again tomorrow when I Loctite the screws in.

Replaced brake and clutch cables and switched the stock levers on the T5 with some SIP adjustables. Wish I'd done it sooner as they feel great, and they look pretty cool too which is always a bonus I guess.

Also glued a tap washer, as previously mentioned, to my new side stand to stop it from slapping the frame and it works a treat!
