It's Not So Relevant, but still Not So Modern.

On vacation this week in Michigan with my family, we rented a vintage speedboat to cruise around for a couple hours. My wife enjoyed it so much, she said, "We should get one."

I looked on Craigslist and there was an ad that had just gone up for a vintage speedboat with trailer and a 45HP motor about an hour from my house for the low, low price of FREE. Contacted the seller, he said I was the first caller. Since he worked for the yard, I bribed him $200 to take the listing down until I got back in town and could come pick it up, which he happily did.

Yesterday, I drove back from Michigan, rented a truck and trailer, and hauled it (plus about 30 mosquito bites) back to my house.

It had been sitting in a storage yard untouched since 1988, but I've done some pretty serious work on older sailboats in the past and now feel competent to rebuild the motor, so I'm pretty stoked.

Next up...planning & figuring out how best to handle a Bill Of Sale transfer of a boat & trailer. I may have to see if the Vermont Option applies to boats.

Hah!

This ain't my first boat rodeo...

I had a couple of classic sailboats, an Irwin 23 and a C&C 35 over the years. This is smaller and simpler than either of them, plus I still have most of the stuff I'd need like life jackets, radios, etc. down in my basement, so the big cost will be replacing the existing seats and adding a bench in the back.

This is a 1962 speedboat with amazingly well-preserved gelcoat and a motor that, in my VERY preliminary inspection, really only needs new rings & seals.

It even has the original throttle with the key in ignition.

I took time out from boat work to put the new BGM top end on the Stella. Went to pressure test it and the air was hissing out as fast as I could pump it in.

I did the swap in the bike. I may need to pull the motor to do it right.

Meh.

My Sprint had been bogging every time I pulled away or changed gear...
Twisted the pilot jet (at the rear) a little outwards and adjusted the idle jet accordingly and the problem has just disappeared!
This never...ever happens! #chuffed

Also realised Id been running at nearer 3% rather than 2%. She seems to start a lot easier now too. Might be the new spark plug lead I fitted but you never quite know

Cheers

Yep Bitza the one sticking out the back...anti clockwise about a quarter turn then rev to see if theres any delay...keep going until there isnt. I think mines prob three turns now. It'll affect your idling speed but that an easy adjust

But, oh well.. You know how when you get something new or all fixed up how you like it? Then you get your first ding, scrape, scratch or scuff and it's a mixed blessing because you finally don't have to worry about that any more?

I was riding my AllState thru a rather narrow passage, overconfidentally not paying enough attention and BAM, first blood and a bit more than a little ding . Good news is it's hard to notice on this bike anyway and easy to 'fix' when I get around to it.

I finally got the Stella back on the road today with a new BGM 177 on it.

At the same time, I swapped the top of the reed block from the 30mm to a 34mm inside diameter to match the carb.

Runs well, but seems consistently lean now across the entire rev range on a quick ride around the neighborhood. Hopefully I'll have time to work on dialing in the carb this week, but it's hard to say for sure.

make 3 bosh out of centerstand as 1 for the shock and 2 for the left and right so it will stay there and wont make much movement when i install it

Riding home from the train today, I saw not one, but two, P's pass me going the other direction, independently of each other in the same block.

I never see any vintage scoots, much less two in a 10 second timespan.

One guy waved back to me, the other did not.

I guess assholes are allowed to own cool scoots, too.

I give up, you win the maniac award with your "i cut weld and make a new bushing pipe and voila" shock repair.

Killing time today, I was looking at this Husqvarna ad wondering why can't we ever have anything nice? How many Husky TE250i's are there and how many potential Vespas are there? Could this FI adapt to an autolube 200 I wonder? http://www.husqvarna-motorcycles.com/enduro/2-stroke/te-250i/
Quote:
A revolution in 2-stroke technology, the TE 250i takes the simple, low maintenance 2-stroke and makes it even simpler. With the addition of electronic fuel injection, fueling is self adjusted meaning the need for jetting changes at different altitudes and temperatures is eliminated ensuring a perfectly controlled power delivery every time. Additionally, 2-stroke oil is pumped independently at regulated ratios eliminating the need to pre-mix fuel and oil meaning less preperation time and more time on the trail.

Why stop at the 250cc? BRC Racing is now currently making 500cc conversion cases for the older ('07-'16) KTM/Husky XC/XC-W/TE bikes. I heard a rumor that they will make cases for the newer injected bikes as well. https://www.facebook.com/brcracingcanada/

I'm envisioning Frank Sanderson building a few 500cc "Series 6" scooters...

Said the hell with things and dumped this troublesome smallie off at Socalguy's for touch up paint work. Latest gremlin on this is two year project is the lower fork bearing/race gave out after a mile of running it around my neighborhood and has since put the front fender into the frame. Be gone Satan! Made progress on the Gilera. I put the clutch back together last weekend. Moved onto the exhaust and found that the flange nut I ordered was the wrong size. A good machinist got me back on track as there was enough material to cut new threads.
