Welp....my second BGM 177 ate itself tonight after about a month. CHT was 280f, I was doing 8,500 RPM's in third gear after accelerating hard from a light, was about to shift to 4th when it cut out.
I pushed it home and pulled the head off. The barrel is trashed above the exhaust port. What are people liking for a torque-y, cast iron 177 these days? ![]() |

Fercrissakes. That kit's not even broken in yet.
What's the piston-to-bore measurement? If you're looking for a torque-y 177 cast iron kit, I've got two words for you: Po Lini |

Agree on the cast iron Polini, if you mess up - clean up the piston, hone & fresh rings if you got off it in time and didn't chew it up. If you did, a new piston & an oversize bore will cost less than a new kit.
Today I decided just to get a halogen bulb and not go for one of these because it's probably more than I have in the damn bike. Plus it needs a battery, don't got that. VERY cool and great lighting, but it's a little north of $750 ![]() ![]() https://www.sip-scootershop.com/en/products/headlamp+unit+jw+speaker+_57551721 |

Finally got the tool box installed on VNB. Wished I had help, probably like you and your shock. It means reaching inside the toolbox while also reaching up in the frame by the tire or down the hole under the gas tank at the same time and trying to keep little 7mm socket & box end wrench on & straight. Then endlessly tightening and keeping the damn rubber strip on the tool box edge all around.
Just getting all the screws, washers & nuts in place is cramp inducing and you can't see what you're doing. Mostly laying on the floor or on my knees, there's no 'good' position. Next time I'll wait for help. My left hip DOES feel bruised inside, but my shoulder is merely sore as hell and thankfully my knees are not bad. Getting old is not for wussies. |

Polini arrived this evening. Didn't have a chance to do more than pull it out of the box, say "yep, that's a Polini kit," and go from there.
We'll see how it does and I'll see if the BGM can be saved, in which case the Polini can go on the VBB and that should be a really fun little bike. The 6mm base spacer from SIP is ported larger than the jug, but probably pretty close to what I have with the BGM, so I'll have to get that matched up or fill things in with JBWeld. More likely, a little of both: the Polini will get matched up to the new packer, then I'll fill in any voids in the cases to match. That should keep me out of trouble over the weekend. |

Is it grease on the grips? I use caustic soda to degrease and it works pretty well. Gloves and glasses though, it's pretty nasty stuff.

Found this today. I knew most of this, but Virginian put it together so well in his thread here: The Virginian's Meanderings that I thought you'd enjoy a snippet if you missed it.
Virginian wrote: .... In 1944, Piaggio engineers Renzo Spolti and Vittorio Casini designed a motorcycle with bodywork fully enclosing the drivetrain and forming a tall splash guard at the front. In addition to the bodywork, the design included handlebar-mounted controls, forced air cooling, wheels of small diameter, and a tall central section that had to be straddled. Officially known as the MP5 ("Moto Piaggio no. 5"), the prototype was nicknamed "Paperino" (either "duckling" or "Donald Duck" in Italian). Piaggio was displeased with the MP5, especially the tall central section. He contracted aeronautical engineer Corradino D'Ascanio, to redesign the scooter. D'Ascanio, who had earlier been consulted by Ferdinando Innocenti about scooter design and manufacture, made it immediately known that he hated motorcycles, believing them to be bulky, dirty, and unreliable. D'Ascanio's MP6 prototype had its engine mounted beside the rear wheel. The wheel was driven directly from the transmission, eliminating the drive chain and the oil and dirt associated with it. The prototype had a unit spar frame with stress-bearing steel outer panels. These changes allowed the MP6 to have a step-through design without a centre section like that of the MP5 Paperino. The MP6 design also included a single sided front suspension, interchangeable front and rear wheels mounted on stub axles, and a spare wheel. Other features of the MP6 were similar to those on the Paperino, including the handlebar-mounted controls and the enclosed bodywork with the tall front splash guard. Upon seeing the MP6 for the first time, Enrico Piaggio exclaimed: "Sembra una vespa!" ("It resembles a wasp!") Piaggio effectively named his new scooter on the spot. ![]() In April 1946, this amazing new, functional and innovative mode of transport was presented to the general public for the first time in a Golf Club in Rome. The shield was embossed with a new logo which replaced the previous Piaggio Aircraft emblem. Vespa was an immediate success and gained extensive media interest as well as public curiosity, surprise and even skepticism. The first sales of Vespa were managed through a small dealer network and the price of the standard model was 55,000 lire, while the deluxe version was sold for 66,000 lire. ...... |

Not that you Southern California peeps have these problems, but I used to have serious issues with fog turning to frost on the inside of the visor during the serious winter months. Yesterday was boat work day, but today will be tuning the carb on the Stella for the Polini, and ordering a new speedo cable for the VBB. The last time I tried to deal with this, the threaded stub on the re-pop speedo that's in it was too small for a standard VBB cable, but I need to go back and re-measure for sure. Maybe I ordered a 2.7 and needed a 1.9. I just can't remember. Instead, I've been riding around with no speedo and just keeping up with traffic. |

Ordered a new Piston for the BGM (looks like it's just smeared aluminum on closer inspection) along with a couple of shorter base gaskets this morning. I want to up the port timing a few degrees.
I also ordered both a 1.9 and 2.7mm speedo cables for the VBB because I figure one of them will fit and the cost of the cable is the same as the cost of shipping if I ordered the wrong one. Sunday, I spent time getting the Polini dialed in on the Stella. I'm still on the stock needle (Pinasco N68E, but that needs to change, as it's too lean at 1/4 throttle) and doesn't return cleanly to idle. But the power is good, temps have yet to break 280, Air:Fuel meter looks good other than the 1/4 throttle, so I figure it will get me through Slaughterhouse if nothing else. I just got back in town from celebrating my anniversary (19 years. Yay, us!), so tomorrow afternoon or this weekend, I'll be able to finish tuning the Stella for Slaughterhouse. |

I now have a working speedo on the VBB. I still don't know what cable would fit the speedo that was in it (my father-in-law put it in before I got the bike), but the one he'd pulled out prior to that is now installed and working.
It's in Kilometers and mayor may not be totally inaccurate, but at least I've got something. I also finally swapped away from the N68E needle that came in my PWK 34 to a JJH so I could begin tuning the mid-range properly. Naturally, things got hard to shift and it felt like the clutch was dragging about this same time, so I got to spend some time fighting with that. Pulled the clutch cover off and it looks like the plates on the Superstrong are at least a little bit chewed up. Of course, this happened a week after I ordered a new piston for the BGM from scooter-speed, so now I need to place another order, hopefully not all the way from Germany this time. Along those same lines, anyone know which is the correct plate set for the superstrong? Is it these? |
