Another awesome looking project, ebeth! I always love to see what you come up with, and am even more amazed at how quickly you're able to get them done, too.
I spent most of my weekend doing carpentry on my boat project, along with a little carb tuning on the Sprint and freeing up the rear brake on the Stella, which finally succumbed to road salt and locked up last week. I thought I was going to get away without any issues this winter, but, Nope. |

Had the day off, so I changed the gear oil, put in a new spark plug, (NGK B8es), cleaned the air filter and added a bit of air to the tires.
Weather is good so I went for a nice ride. ![]() |

Thanks, E!
This weekend was mostly boat work, with a little bit of mixture screw adjusting on both the Stella and the Sprint. The Stella was too lean, so didn't return to idle well, the Sprint was bogging a little off the line. Both are running much better now, even if the Sprint still needs a proper dialing in. On the boat, I finished the cockpit carpentry, poured foam under the deck, and built up all the deck features. Just a little finishing work, like rounding corners, then it'll be time to lay on fiberglass and do the last of the painting. I'm like you when it comes to thinking through projects. Even when I have all the parts in hand, I'll work it through in my head over and over until it feels right, then execute in one big push. I don't know if that's the best way to do it, but it works for me.

Had a strange loss of power on the Stella. Went from running great with the air screw adjustment to no power.
I suspect that I had a bit of JB Weld where I broke through the transfers come loose and it's leaking air, because it smelled like burnt oil when I parked. It might also just be a dirty jet, but the impact is across all throttle settings. Either one of those, while moderately annoying, would be fine compared to pretty much all other options. |

I rebuilt the brake caliper (frozen piston), and the master cylinder. Fitted a Retro LED bobber taillight that I found in a box of old parts. Not so sure about the looks, but it is unbreakable (I tried it, dropped it several times).
And that's it. Bike started right up, ready for the season. ![]() ![]() |

Cracked open my 6V AC horn and cleaned up all of the corrosion. Put it back together and sealed with silicon. THE QUACK IS BACK!
Also reinstalled a new speedo cable. With the reconditioned speedo from Speedo King everything moves as smooth as silk. The only thing not working well is my brake light. The harness checks out. I believe there is a bad connection at the stator. |

Over the weekend I fitted a AF Parts carrier and no-name caliper. LTH had a sale on the carrier, which was the type without a speedo drive. Even after I bought a Koso speedo sensor it still worked out $100 cheaper than the type with a speedo drive. Also, it only took me 6 - 7 hours to bleed it. A Personal Best!!

Charlieman, I used every trick! Even the strap-the-orbital-sander-to-the-master-cylinder-and-leave-it-running-for-an-hour trick! I had the scooter almost on it's side so as to leave a continuous uphill path for the bubbles. That and continuing to bleed the master cylinder at the connection to the hose were the key I think.
PP, those calipers you're showing are a little different than mine. I compared my one to the Stage 6 caliper before buying and satisfied myself that they were the same thing. Yeah I know what you mean about the writing... someone said that it looked cool and that I should try it first before painting it. Now that it's on I don't mind it so much. I could say it's from a specialist manufacturer in Germany (Rechsaltz-Pelzer-Meissner) as I don't think that many people will look and point and shout "AliExpress!" Certainly now that I chose the one without a spelling mistake in the word 'racing' anyway. Here's one - http://tinyurl.com/yyjubhv4 |

So my week has gotten off to a rough start.
First, when I went to leave for the train yesterday morning, the Stella wouldn't start. Turned out to be just out of gas, so that wasn't terrible. Then, as I was leaving to get gas I brushed the tail light of the Sprint, and it promptly disintegrated into pieces on the floor. FML. So I put enough gas in the tank to get over to the gas station, pull out my 2T oil, and realize it's almost empty and I don't have any more, so I added a little, rode over to the gas station, then measured out how much I had to determine how much gas I could buy. Half a gallon later, I'm headed home. This morning, I super-glued it all back together and it's good again, then because I was heading in late and the weather was nice, decided to ride into the office. I'm rolling down Lake Shore Drive (highway along the Chicago lake front). I'm not sure how fast I was going because the speedo on the Sprint is, at best, aspirational, but probably about 60 based on what traffic usually runs at along there. The CHT had stabilized at about 325 at half throttle and I was rolling happily down the highway when...hard seize. Rear wheel locked, I grabbed the clutch, rolled to the side of the highway (no shoulder, of course), and just sat for a minute. I kicked it over and, to my surprise and delight, it fired right back up, so I dodged that bullet. Bless that Polini's cast iron heart. The CHT never read over 325, but it showed the peak temp as 373. I rode on down to the office and parked, but I was pretty irritated and have pretty much lost faith in the ol' Trailtech at this point. Hopefully the ride home will be less eventful. ![]() |
