It must have been a couple of years since SubEtherBass and I had a ride with just the two of us. And this turned out to be quite memorable, as often happens with Callum for one reason or another.
We were down at Callum's in Coronet Bay and having a look at maps, trying to work out a route that took in as many good roads as could be fitted in a day. At least some parts of the Grand Ridge Road were a given, with a loop back that hopefully didn't involve straight highway roads... we were spoilt for choice.
The day started with a bang, albiet a small one as we headed to the servo. Which was 100 metres away. Blown tube on Speedy... just one of many in recent times with the last being on xmas day.
Once under way it didn't take long to find the awesome roads and the amazing scenery. While the smoke haze obviously had an ominous feel, it did lend a certain mystery or eeriness to the views. There was suprisingly little traffic. Once into the twisties and further, we only saw two utes and a pair of dirt bikes in about a three hour period! The best bits of the GRR are fantastic but you do need to watch for those mid-corner bumps and dips which can be a bit scary.
Then we got out of the farmland and into the forest and it was absolutely gorgeous. The photos don't do it justice. After a bit we ended up on a well-made logging road, although the gravel size started to get bigger and bigger!
After a bit Speedy decided to pull over, complaining of an odd feeling of disconnectedness and a possible tummy bug in the crankshaftal area. The clutch was removed for inspection with suprising ease, in fact had the scooter been upright it would have fallen out once the cover was off.
Being a bit short on super glue Speedy was escorted to the privacy of some nearby bushes/swamp, so we piled on mine, two up, back for a vehicle to collect it with.
That in itself was also great fun, as twisty dirt gave way to twisty bitumen, although some of the decision making of the road repair crew in that part of the world left a bit to be desired! They kept making 'repairs' that somehow always ended up as a narrow band of fine gravel spread in a half-metre wide strip, almost always just before the corners!
Once on to the highway we filled up then sat on 100 for the next 40 minutes, well aware that we didn't want to be looking for Speedy in the dark. That was also fun - but not too much a Callum had a little snooze. Well it had been a long day.
