I wanted to share a diy lift idea I figured out for a recent repair job on my GTS.

First I tried just hoisting it from the roof but that was next to impossible trying to adjust all the straps. If I had 2 good straps that would easily adjust under weight it might have worked but...I didn't

I also tried a car jack and the straps but I couldn't get the weight right. The scooter was just too back heavy and the jack kept slipping and falling.

So, here's what finally worked.
I made this with screws and spare wood I found laying around. Bolting the 2 x 4s in place really helped stability.

So, using the straps as an extra heave-ho (an extra helper would have worked as well) I lifted the bike onto the stand

Then, I moved the straps to the handlebars, making sure not to torque the throttle and cause it undo harm. As you can see, this was plenty of space to lower the engine in order for me to get the tank out to change the fuel pump.

Some creative thinking there!

One of my concerns might be using the rear rack as a lift point. Can't remember the rating, but there's a limit to how much weight they should hold when transporting. Might be possible to use a padded hook under the rear cowling (metal) instead?

Agreed, I'd be careful lifting the scoot with the rear rack.

i thought the rear rack limit had more to do with the balance of the bike rather then the strength of the rack. My understanding is The concern is applying excessive weight to the scooter or motorcycle behind the rear axle.

You may have a point there...OTOH, there's just a couple of bolts holding that thing on.... Can you do it? Obviously. Should you? Nerd emoticon

Fuel Pump
My question is why does this bike already need a fuel pump and does a carborated bike have a fuel pump I have a 05 and 06 with 20000 miles on them.

There were a number of years where the GTS fuel pump often failed prematurely. There was even a program in place for replacing the fuel pumps if I recall correctly.

Your GT200 does have a fuel pump even though it is carbureted But it's a very different type of fuel pump. It is a vacuum operated mechanical fuel pump that is just downstream from the fuel tap. It is not located in the fuel tank like on the fuel injected GTS. Much more simple and less expensive to change on the GT200.

I have an old, really old, block and tackle that often saves my biscuits, and my back, for odd lifting heavy jobs...like this gravel compactor a few weeks ago.

...wow...I really need to clean my garage, tho....
