Modern Vespa

Bajaj Chetak became part of our family in 1997 and since then it has been with us.Initially it was used by my father upto year 2009 after which it was neglected for 3 years as commuting 20 kms to office was not possible in Mumbai city traffic.It was in 2012 when my father got it painted and the damage done to its body in Mumbai weather was also sorted out.Though we got it all running as new, it was covered and put up in the garage as we were not able to use it much.
We moved to a small town in 2014.However it was in March 2015 I myself decided to get it all running up.It costed me just 1500 rupees(about $25) to get it running up again.Truly,these 2 stroke motors are far more robust and reliable than its 4 stroke counterparts.Even after gathering dust for 3 years the scoot starts within first 3 kicks.
Its already a year and half now since I started riding the scoot,I have covered nearly 1200kms on it.The odo says 33176 but yet the engine is as good as new.
I got the following work done in past 1 year:
New carburettor and petrol cock(The old one always overflowed and gave a lot of starting trouble)
New brake shoe(old ones were completely worn out)
New accelerator cable,grips and rear view mirror.
New Lock set
New Silencer(Had very heavy leakage of carbon from old one)
The scoot gives an average of 40kmpl overall.The scoot has many advantages as well as disadvantages also.Will list them here,
Advantages:
1)It is a great workhorse-can easily carry a family with 2 kids and luggage.
2)Powerful 2 stroke motor-If maintained and tuned properly,it can beat any of modern 150cc scoots in 0-60kmph race.
3)Great average for its age(my TVS wego 110cc 2014 gives average of 50kmpl)
4)Ample luggage place
5)Low maintainence cost(I have spent only 7000 rupees($100 approx)in past one year on it)
Disadvantages:
1)Starting problems are evident(If you have a weak coil your scoot will give you even more tough time)
2)Gears will be very slow to engage in rains(Put a plastic sheet over the headset even if you park it in garage to prevent such trouble)
3)Requires 2t oil to be added in tank each time you fillup(Some scoots like Vespas came with a separate 2t oil tank and had autolube system)
4)2stroke scoots produce are more polluting than the four stroke scoots.
5)Rust-They love to rust and until you don't protect it from the weather outside,you may find spots of rust in a year or so.(Depend on how you keep it and where you live,like coastel areas etc.)
Overall,It is a nice scoot to have and spare parts are neither expensive nor they are going to go off the market soon,keeping the scoot in tip-top condition is pretty easy.The scoot may not appeal to one and all put it has it has carved it's own space in the 2 wheeler world.
