That looks pretty cool, but just some quick feedback on the article.

It's difficult to read your FAQ section on a mobile. With no markers to which question is being answered in each answer I have to scroll up and count each dot to see which answer correlates to which question. Maybe next time number them? Or just put the answer italicized under the question?

They're going to sell it! I don't know if I can justify 200 bucks for one though.

Correct me if I'm wrong. The device is using your phones data plan? If so that's more expensive and uses the phones power up. If one doesn't have their hooked up to the scooter that could drain the phones battery?
I like the looks of it but at £149 I'm not sure. I see only £ is it sold in the States yet?

Its not quite like that,

You download the maps first so no data usage on the go. Also it mentions the gps is integrated in the sat nav too. I'd imagine phone battery life would suffer with the constant link to the device as it streams your downloaded maps to the tom tom.

reading between the lines my assumption is that you can download maps over wifi onto your phone. then it would use data from the phone just for traffic updates, etc, which should be pretty low bandwidth. it uses it's own gps so shouldn't drain the phone too much despite maintaining a bluetooth connection, though will take up some room on the phone.

i'm trying to establish whether it has advanced lane guidance like many of the other tomtom devices. otherwise it's less practically useful than the tomtom phone app. there is no reference to this in any of their promotional material.

i like the relative cheapness, the styling, small size, and that it can be clipped to a mirror stem without a ram mount. having the gps speedo on the screen is also kind of handy.

i had a different tomtom which i eventually stopped using because they revised their app and lost all my saved points. and clipping my phone to the bike and using google maps proved more generally convenient. but my phone will shut down in really cold weather so having something which doesn't drain the phone by having it's screen always active, and which is weatherproof is definitely of interest. i wonder how well the yellow will match my sprint's giallo positano.

the battery life seems reassuring. especially given i'm already setup for charging a dozen usb devices and it can be charged while used if really necessary. ease of mounting/unmounting plus the battery life seems like a good combination.

i'm assuming the audio would go via bluetooth from my phone to my helmet rather than the satnav to my helmet so it ought to play reasonably well with any other audio i'm also streaming from the phone.

It's been out less than a week. I checked to see if my phone was compatible and was told no. I checked again from my phone and was told the app isn't available in my country (US). I hope they plan to make this available soon in the states. I think interest here is high and I plan on purchasing as soon as the app is ready here.

Just saw this article in Tech Times about the VIO. In the last paragraph they list the price as $199.40. Dollars instead of Pounds. Tech Times is a US focused news site. Could this be a good omen?

The US is likely in their plan. Our market is big enough to make it worthwhile. Post in the forums that you are interested and hopefully enough noise will push them. For TomTom, the change to make this work here is basically a map thing.

It should use whatever you want to send it from your phone. I have offline maps on my phone in both Garmin and Co-Pilot apps so no data use while using the GPS. This is important because I'm often in places where data coverage is piss poor.

Got this from the TomTom forum....
Quote:
According to the information at TomTom's Facebook page, there are plans to expand to the US in future, but no dates are available yet. Currently, Vio app doesn't contain US map coverage, so buying a device in UK for using in the US doesn't make much sense.
Patience grasshopper....

The Vio manual is now available on the TomTom website. This confirms one of my queries which is that it does indeed support Advanced Lane Guidance.

Hmm, there seem to be an awful lot of features available on the Android app but not the iPhone app. EG: According to the manual you cannot choose "motorways" under the "avoid on every ride" menu if you're on iPhone.

I went on the TomTom FB page and had the following exchange...

Eric - Found out about this yesterday and was ready to order but found the app isn't available in the US. Any word of the US release date?

TomTom- Hi Eric, not yet! We're starting to roll these out in Europe first, and afterwards we'll expand to the States and other countries. If you keep an eye on TomTomUSA they'll be sure to announce the new product there.

So... It's definitely coming to the States but only after the European roll-out. I tried to pin them down on the time frame (weeks, months, or next year) in a later post but haven't received a reply yet.

I was just scanning the manual and it seems you can enter pre-planned "scenic routes" if you run the app on Android and don't want fastest/shortest route from A to B. If this is true it would be great for planning club rides. Now I really, really want one.

Information is quick to arrive, auto zoom when you approach an intersection, display of motorway signs as soon as you get to an entrance or exit ramp, and responsive to the changes of itineraries related traffic.
Proposal also different route indicating the distance and time depending on traffic.
