Morning all:

Twice in the last month or so I have had a biker that I encountered while riding, ring a bell at me. It was like one of those little bells you see on a kids bike.

What does that mean?

I have been Googleing it and have had no success. I dont' know wheter to take it as a compliment or an insult.

If it's an insult, it seems like they are going to a lot of work / taking up handlebar space just to be a d*ck.

Enjoy your days.

Don in KC.

Never heard of it. I'd ignore it, move on and enjoy the ride.

Welcome to MV.

Never heard of it. Was it the same person, or is there a new trend among KC Harley riders?

I do have a bicycle bell on my Zuma. Some little kids get a kick out of it...but I'm sure it could only be heard if I'm stopped.

You are sure it was something on the handlebar and not a gremlin bell?

Yeah, that's my ringtone for texts. ...and I'm guessing if you could hear the bell, you must have been stopped, so you might hear it then.

But I don't ride a Harley.

Did you actually see the bell on the handlebar...could be yer brain is filling in that detail.

Having ridden a Road King for a few years I can tell you that there are a few parts that small stones can bounce off of to make that bell sound. The horn cover and engine guards are a couple that come to mind. It would be an amazing coincidence if that happened twice just when you were in earshot. I've been to a couple of large Harley gatherings and I am quite certain that I never saw a handlebar bell on anyone's bike...at least on a bike that was STILL in attendance.

Maybe it's something nice. Maybe the rider is just saying "Nice Vespa Dude."

Yup, me too: I gotta believe that anyone who puts a cute lil child's bell on a Harley isn't exactly looking for a fight.

I mean, if a guy wanted to be a dick he'd just goose the loud pipes, or put an air horn on there or sumpin.

Speaking of Harleys, there's a cool 3 part mini series on the Discovery channel about how HD got started. Great show.

Some motorcyclists use Demon or Gremlin bells. It may have been that.

When I owned a Honda CH250 Elite Scooter I had a bright yellow and blue squeeze bulb horn on the grab bar. They are usually to small to really fit a motorcycle handle bars. I thought it was cute. Also towards the end of his life as my father died from Pancreatic Cancer he used that horn because he was too weak to call out. So it had some meaning to me. Still I often used it when kids waved they could hear it.
