I always ride with a helmet if i go more than a 2 mile radius from my house. Yesterday i took the Vino to the store (about a mile and a half). Just got down the road when this bird dive bombs me. stupid Myna had a death wish. Splatted all over me and the bike when he hit my mirror. Wouldn't of been fun if he had hit me in the head.

It's a lottery out there.
I had a friend lose 2 fingers from lump of wood being kicked up by a car in front of him and smashed his left hand into bone dust.

I had no idea that there would still be states in the USA where you don't have to wear a helmet.

It's been compulsory in Australia for around 45 years (since 1971 or 1972, depending on the State), except for one state, Victoria, which introduced compulsory helmet laws in 1968.

I started riding in January 1968, a Vespa of course - the start of my love affair with them - and I can't remember any of my fellow Mods not wearing helmets even though they weren't compulsory.

~~~That's the beauty of 'states rights', now, if we could only get the feds off our backs even more...
When I started riding in the mid 70's, ABATE was popular and probably the only game around, that was organized anyways, to rid individual states from onerous federal regulations aimed towards helping motorcyclists. The feds used a particular stick, to keep the states in line, and from getting rid of helmet laws, which was, withholding federal highway funds, if individual states went helmet less. Fast forward to when Fla. became helmet-less, I never really followed the whys and wherefores as to how Fla. got around the aforementioned, age old money game. I do know it made then governor Jeb Bush popular with a lot of motorcyclists (and scooterists too) when Fla. became a legal state to ride w/o requiring a helmet, so long as you have adequate health coverage. Of course now, every Floridian should have health coverage, according to the affordable health care act <Aye> Yeah, real affordable, premiums are going up 20% in 2017 (for Floridians)
Disclaimer- I have no real interest in what others do, by wearing, or not wearing helmets when they ride as I believe in letting those who ride, decide. That said, I typically wear a full face helmet whenever I ride
