Background:

I have a 2003 Et-2 with 5500 mi. I've owned it about 7 years. Do all the normal maintenance and repair myself.

Last week I slapped new pirelli tires, checked brakes, put a fresh batt in it and repaired a few small issues. Bike running better than ever @ 40 +. I also did a rear gear oil change with Motul.

Bike was stock when I got it and I put a Leo vince exhaust, new rollers and up jetted about 3 years ago.

After I did all the recent work the scooter was running amazingly well.

Problem 1)

For the last few days is loses poser at about 3/4 speed while I'm accellerating. Its like its slipping. It doesn't sound like the engine is having a problem, but suddenly the bike decelerates a little....then continues on. I'm doing more tests in a few minutes to see if I can
get to the bottom of exact nature of it. IM thinking maybe the BELT is not gripping ?

Prob 2)

CLiCKING sound has been coming from the rear seemingly near the transmission. Sounds like there is a small metal piece rattling around randomly. Its a tiny sound tick tick tick....

I removed the tranny cover today and looked around, spun the clutch and drive pullies ...cant duplicate it.

Any help appreciated.

Just did a bunch of speed runs and heres the scoop:

The metallic sound is pretty light but constant anywhere except at idle. At Idle its silent.

Def coming from area of the clutch. It sounds similar but not a s severe as the metallic sound you here if you touch the kickstart lever while the bike is running.

Not the exact sound but similar.

The Power loss: All the runs I did were full throttle from dead stop to 40 mph.
A few times it seemed to hesitate a bit in the 25- 30 mph range. Almost like it was shifting a gear ... Engine running perfect.

Im not sure how old the belt is but perhaps that could be an issue ?

The metal ticking sound seems new.... Girlfriend even mentioned it last time she was on the back ....

Does anyone else have this noise coming from the lower left rear area ?

A ticking noise or a sound like a small bell ringing?

When was the last time you replaced the belt? 3 years on one set of rollers? I would start with these 2 items.

Also check the clutch - there's a backing plate that can come loose, and also the thin nut that holds it all together.

Well unfortunately it all just got worse. Power is still surging and now it's making some pretty strange sounds down in the tranny area. I suspect the problem to reveal itself soon. I've never played with the clutch itself since you need a special tool correct ?

Because if its a bell ringing type of sound its the clutch backing plate possibly.....

...but it seems that if its "surging" then there is something else awry?

The sound was definitely not the ting ting bell ringing sound some of these scoots produce. IT was like metal clicking. A small thin piece of metal at that. And it occurs randomly but never at idle.

ALSO,
I tested the compression and got a consistent 80 psi.

I checked the reed valves and they are perfect as far as I see, no cracks or pieces missing.

SO thats good.

Anyone know if 80 psi is a good # ?

I ran it the other day for further tests and it seemed to be totally normal again ...good power. I will have to keep running and testing. If its gone perhaps it was some bad fuel ?

It was always my understanding that compression on a 50cc engine should be in the range of 100-130ish, 80 is on the low side.

Ride tested 2 more times. It's running as strong as ever. Gets up to 42 on the speedo. I'm hoping it was just some bad gas and thats it. It was doing all kinds of hiccups from the exhaust before it cleared up.

Anyone else test compression on their 50cc's ?

I'll update if anything else happens.
