I am thinking about installing a reasonably-priced aftermarket exhaust on my 2010 GTS300.

Rather than succumbing to the best advertising, I am wondering if the 'wisdom of the list' has a consensus suggestion?

I am assuming an aftermarket system will provide some improvement in performance and maybe even mpg.

My preference would be an Akrapovic. They look well made.I am biased towards it though. If my original ever rots out, that is what I will get. Don't expect much in performance gain without other work. So I heard.

If you want sound and style matching Akapovic but about $150 less check the Malossi RX black edition. I've installed both on different GTS's and definitely like the Malossi just as much.

Happystrada,

Thanks for the reply.

Our scoots look like twins. Is your rear chrome guard the Vespa version which is what I have? If so, does the Malossi interfere with the rear suspension travel?

I want to find an exhaust with a little rumble and growl but not too loud so it becomes fatiguing and annoying. Some aftermarkets brands almost sound like 2 stroke engines.

Glad to help! The bars are the OEM Vespa and they do not interfere with the exhaust. The older Vespa bars by Logo Scooter used to hit the tip of most aftermarket exhausts so thats the warning you'll see out there and it is outdated. Scooterpartsco.com has the Malossi for $389 and you can get it within a week. Easy straight forward install.

Slip on, exactly like the Akra. I did the stainless manifold at the same time, nice growl but not obnoxious. Just enough to make it sporty.

Can't be 100% since it was on two different GTS's about a year apart but I'd dare say pretty darn close.

I looked into after market exhausts but quickly got sticker shock. Maybe it's just me but I think that most of them ruin the classic lines of the GTS. I ended up having my stock exhaust cleaned up and powder coated.

My dealership farmed it out to a place in south Jersey. Shouldn't be hard to find a place in Brooklyn or Queens to do it. Removing it is pretty straight forward and a torx wrench will get the chrome heat shield off. Make sure you use a new exhaust gasket when you reattach it.

I like the Akrapovic for the quality, the shape and the upswept angle. It just looks like I me it belongs on the Vespa. No offense, but many of these he others hang low or level with the ground, leaving a big gap between the scooter body and the top of the muffler. Kinda like it "was" added on. Just my opinion.

Good to know. Thanks!

I think the stock exhaust starts to look a bit ratty well before it wears out; Melody's pipe is just starting to have bits of its paint flake off - nothing horrible yet, but I'm betting that in a year's time I'll be looking to have it repainted. I also happen to like the sound of the stock pipe...it has what I'd call a appropriate rumble for this bike, neither wimpy or ridiculously outsized.

As no one's answered your question on this, I think I should say that NONE of the aftermarket exhausts I've seen fitted in the UK over stock have offered any performance improvement, with ONE exception - one of the early PM tuning designs (maybe 38?) that had a slight bhp gain shown on a dyno test, but so slight that if you'd got a head wind or had a heavy lunch then *poof* it was gone. So I am unashamedly 'pro-stock' for the GTS, not least because after all the years of owning one I can't wrap my head around removing a perfectly good designed-for exhaust (in some owners cases) and spending £300-400 to achieve a brief 'ooo...looks good, sounds different' moment. YMMV. The 'loud pipes save lives' argument normally comes up but I'll set that aside here as you either subscribe to that or you don't.

If you want more performance from the GTS then a mid flyscreen is generally accepted to give you +5mph top end by improving air flow, there are a few variator and roller weight converts on MV, and there's been a healthy performance plug debate recently that's got merit. But none of the latter have been consistent and validated enough so owners or the parts manufacturers are putting them out there as 'proven'.

Not being a grinch here, just genuine feedback... Good luck whatever you choose - 'you pays your money and you makes your choice'

DAM
100% agree with what brown_beret7 said, most aftermarket exhausts create impression that a body panel is missing just above the exhaust. As far as gains are concern except sound there is no relevant gain by replacing exhaust only.

If I ever decide to replace the stock exhaust on my GTV 300 it will be DAM http://www.damexhaust.com/home
Sample of the look and sound

You know that look you are describing is because the scoot's pictured are on their center stands and the exhaust is attached to the swing arm creating that effect? Once the bike is on the ground that gap completely disappears and the exhaust flows with the lines.

Paul, it was the PM 68 that was supposed to give you 2 more BHP, i had one and on the road there was no noticable difference to a standard pipe, same with my Remus & Polini, no gasket, no rust, less weight, better looks & empty pockets is what you get lol.

I cheaped out and just shot my GT's with $8 semi gloss BBQ hi temp paint. I like the quiet much better, plus the GT200's probably have to be rejetted for aftermarket pipes.

The Akapovic looks to be more upswept to me, and flows with the scoot, IMO. Maybe I am wrong. It just looked me like it was made or came on the scoot-rather than added on. All a minor issue. As long as your are happy with yours, that is what counts.

That's kinda my point.. lol Laughing emoticon

I think rust on the standard one is a relative thing - if you leave it, don't clean the scoot, ride in all UK weathers etc then it'll rust, though other countries with different climates just don't seem to get the rust issues we get in the UK. My original exhaust on my 2009 did rust quite badly, but I bought a second hand replacement that was pretty much new, stripped all the old paint completely off, replaced with a good paint (Thermacure) and it's been fine for a few years now, with the odd check and paint top up. I don't do massive miles (day trips then long euro tours) and I've just got used to caring for the exhaust like I would any other part of the GTS....

When I bought my GTS brand new the exhaust paint peeled off at an alarming rate within 7-8 months, I wire brushed it off and sprayed it with a heat resistant paint. A few days later some sod knocked it over and damaged the paint and other bits and bobs including the exhaust. It was replaced by the insurer and, 18 months on, the new one is fine. I suppose that's Vespa's for you.

This link allows to compare different exhausts, look and sound:
https://www.vespa-forum.at/index.php/Thread/697-Auspuffsounds-Remus-Akrapovic-Malossi-DAM-PM68-Leo-Vince/
In my opinion the DAM is a winner, my second choice would be Remus. I wonder what would be your picks. Sorry, last video with Leo Vince Vintage exhaust doesn't work

With a stock exhaust, it's easier to sneak up on young whippersnappers when they step on your lawn, and it doesn't distract from the color beige.

No tucking for me, just the screen creates better airflow over the shoulders and away from the torso where the drag is greatest. I also upgraded my helmet to a Schuberth C3 which is a great design for quiet and comfort.

The mid screen is the genuine Vespa one, shown in this comparison I made up in the top right. They'll be a Vespa part number for it, so it should be possible to order it from an Vespa dealer in any country. This is it on eBay UK, so you know what to look for. There are various other designs though from Faco etc, and lots of posts on MV about screen choice you might want to look at and read through...
