Modern Vespa

Hey all - I'm a bit overdue on my 6k mile service for my GTS 300 and was hoping to get some guidance on parts, etc. Looking over the service manual, it looks like belt and rollers are the major service parts. Are there any recommended brands/types for these or the other replacement parts (kevlar belt?), or is OEM the way to go?

I bought a pair of Heidenau K61 tires to also put on - 140 on the rear and 130 on the front. I've read that some use Dr Pulley rollers?

Also, anyone have any recommendations on shops for this service? I've been by SF Scooter Centre and they seem like good guys. I've also seen a bunch of flyers for Bello Moto, but haven't been by their place.

Any advice would be appreciated. I ride my GTS everyday on San Francisco streets which are crap - I am meticulous about changing out my oil every thousand miles or so and cleaning out my air filter, but this will be a bigger service than normal.

you might consider doing it yourself. Its pretty easy. There's lots of online tutorials. Try scooterwest.com videos. They are popular and easy to follow. Scooterwest and other sponsor shops will help you decide the parts needed.

Hmmm, I was debating doing that. But don't you need a couple specialized tools - like the variator and belt removal tools?

Where in SF are you and when did you want to tackle the project? I work on the embarcadero but live in San Diego. I'll loan you the tools next month when I come back to work.

If that won't work, I say go to SF scooter centre. Barry's a good guy.

You can buy the tools for less money than the labor charge do do it once, then you can save cash by doing it yourself for the rest of the scooter's life. It is not hard. Even I can do it.

As for belts, they all have Kevlar. I have been using Malossi belts as they cost less and appear to be equal to the OEM. I have probably used at least ten or twelve of these and have had very good results with them.

I usually change them at 7000 to 8000 miles, but sometimes earlier if I have a long (1000 mile plus) ride coming up.

I have broken four, OEM and Malossi, but not always the belt's fault. A bad variator broke two. I had a an OEM go unexplainably at 2500 miles once.

But the rest have looked good at change time. I pushed one to 12,000 miles without breaking.
