Modern Vespa

Hi everybody,
Relatively new to scooters and have a question. I just resurrected a p200e after 20 years sitting. It's now running great but after I changed all the cables the clutch cable snapped after only 300 miles. I was cautious that I didn't overtighten the pinch bolt. I installed a Mallossi 4 disc clutch but used the original springs. The only thing I noticed is the end of the cable adjuster seems to be a bit offset to the clutch arm. The cable is definitely angling slightly as it comes out of the adjuster. Is this normal? Any ideas to make the next one last longer? I was thinking of soldering the cable where it gets clamped by the pinch bolt. I assume that is the weak spot?

Where is the cable parting? At the pinch bolt or at the cable adjuster?

Did the cable itself break..or did the brass barrel bit at the handle come off?
Get high quality cables.

The clutch adjuster can be manipulated /bent a bit so it lines up nice


Ps there are cable kits available that allow you to turn a very small screw in brass barrel so it clamps on to each end of the cable instead of being soldered

In concurrence, if you know where it is breaking you should be able to see why.
Maybe there is too much angle where the inner comes out of the adjuster. The opening in the adjuster barrel may also be sharp and needs to be softened a bit or flared with a small round file. Ideally, the inner should come straight out of the adjuster with virtually no friction/contact.

Might want to look at the hole the cable passes thru and see if there is something that would cause wear. Also make sure the cable isn't too tight and stressed by the clutch springs.

Same thing happened to me the first time I replaced my clutch cable.
Make sure you didn't lose the tiny little disk that goes into the pinch bolt between the screw and the cable. That was my problem.

that's gotta be it. There was nothing between the screw and the cable. And that's where it broke. I ordered two cables and pinch bolts...I assume the new ones will have it.

Get the flexing away from the pinch bolt, from page 7, Tips 'n Trix

That's a really interesting approach, sorta like using heat-shrink tubing to protect electrical wiring that was connected with solder. The wire will usually break right at the end of the solder's wick due to vibration and flexing being focused at that point, so extending heat shrink past that point usually helps.

When the engine is running and shaking around, does that extension wiggle and vibrate around or does it pretty much stay in line with the clutch arm's hole ?
