I stand corrected! But then my knowledge of the players on Zeta Reticula or the ones playing in the small clubs on the shoulder of Orion is limited.

Well done!

Welcome to Asbury Park! The Palace Funhouse.

I loved seedy old places like this! I was going to try to find an appropriate picture for the next tag of San Francisco's Playland at the Beach before it was torn down, but didn't find one I liked. My dad and I used to go to the old Planetarium in Golden Gate Park for the sky show, then come over the Playland right around closing time, with the fog rolling in, when the only people there were the carnies shutting down the midway and taking down the plush. I even remember it in black and white, my own personal film noir.

The Camera Obscura at the Cliff House in San Francisco (Giant Camera) was built in the 1940s as part of Playland at the Beach -- which closed in 1972.

Another major stop for jazzmen back in the day was this town, celebrated in story, movie, and song (though the most well-known song is in a different genre and refers to a corner 6 blocks down from where this shot was taken.)

You might take a train, you might take a plane, but if you have to walk....

Kiss Me Deadly. 1955. With Cloris Leachman!

"Kiss Me Deadly is ... in many ways, the ultimate film of 1950s America, with its themes of speed, money, power, sex, and the atomic bomb intertwined in a tale of a detective who becomes an extortionist in an attempt to turn a chance discovery into personal gain."

Speaking of the movies, this stage play was turned into a movie in 1981. It was the first big role for this actor. Name the actor and the play/movie. (It helps to know that what he's wearing has a reet pleat, a right stripe, and a drape shape.)

Found it!

....but gotta go eat lunch now, so I don't have time to tag it properly. So if someone else jumps in to get it, that's fine.

He's a really great actor! I hadn't seen this film, but it seems interesting so I put it in my Netflix queue to watch. Sounds like this is one performance of his that is a must see!

Ok, heres the tag.

Edward James Olmos, in his breakthrough role as El Pachuco, in the original stage play and then subsequent movie, Zoot Suit.

Probably named after that unfortunate turn of events in 1943 LA.

Well the answer for tochaman's tag was Zoot Suit Riot, The Swingin' Hits of the Cherry Poppin' Daddies.

One note on the film "Zoot Suit" that I should mention is that Edward James Olmos gives a mesmerizing performance, but the film is somewhat hobbled by a low-budget transition from stage to screen. It's very much a filmed play that doesn't get outside of the proscenium very far...and very much of its time...but still worth seeing.

Now as to the Great Wall of China post I must be blind: I don't find the Zoot Suit Riot tag in it. So I'll go get that too and post it next.

In 1958, if you'd taken the A Train you might have arrived there on the day they took this amazing, historic photo! It truly is a virtual who's who, and there's a great website out there that lets you zoom in on the participants and learn more.

Great photo, but I'm mentally walking through Harlem, Central Park, the Upper West Side (and the Upper East Side, just in case) - all places I've been recently but not exhaustively - and I have yet to figure out where ALL of the jazz musicians from 1958 AND all of these pretty models who look like they stumbled out of "alt.world.ralph_lauren (prêt-à-porter division)" would come together to shop.

Perhaps another tiny hint?

Well you're close - Ralph Lauren ( back when his name was still Ralph Lifschitz) got his start there.

It is the oldest surviving men's clothier starting in 1818.

It has many notable customers including Andy Warhol and Abraham Lincoln just to a name a few.

It is also the official clothier of the Lincoln Center Jazz Orchestra.

And lastly it's logo was sought by Jason and the Argonauts.

Movie magic is a funny thing. Ray did all his special effects with models and stop motion. Now we turn it around and create our movie creatures in a very different way.

And just a comment: We've had a couple of "out of bounds" postings just on this page, so it's probably worth mentioning to new players that you must find and use the same picture you're trying to tag - either as your base image or creatively within another image as messy did with the reduced image sitting on top of the scooter - to "win" the tag.

So for my tag above, I could not use just any image of Ray that I found...it had to be that image of Ray with his models.
