Oh dear. Makes me glad I'm doing it very slowly, probably too slow but I don't want anything going wrong. On the upside there is a spare Laughing emoticon

Well I'm all done (I think)

The only thing I'm not sure on is whether anyone grinds the top surface completely flat including the tabs? It looks like the circlip sits on the them so there's potential for premature wear?

Many thanks to everyone's help on this, just finished installing it and it feels amazing.

Very quick bite compared to my old slippy clutch so I'll have to get used to it again but at least i can ride it

Jumping on the CR80 clutch plate bandwagon for the P222. Currently the P222 has a banded 7 spring with Pinasco springs it works OK.

After installing a BGM Superstrong with CR plates in the Bajaj CR plates seem better.

Going to use a Onkle Mike clutch spider https://www.scooter-center.com/en/clutch-spider-onkel-mike-ddog-cnc-type-7-springs-friction-plate-type-honda-cr80-oeouter-115mm-oeinner-108-vespa-rally-180-vsd1t0014741-rally-200-vse1t-px-200-vsx1t-t5-125cc-vnx5t-cosa1-125-vnr1t-cosa1-150-vlr1t-cosa1-200-vsr-3333569

Will use my straight cut 24T gear and Pinasco spring cups with the hole that have been removed from the Bajaj.

Question about the number plates. Notice on the SIP equivalent basket describes as potentially having extra space for 3 or 4 plate set ups. Wonder if Onkle Mike's has the same? I see Ginch built his 7 spring TENINCH with 3 cork plates.

Which leads to the next questions what thickness plain steel plates? Seems there are 1.1, 1.5 and 2mm available. Is thicker better provided there is space for it? Perhaps number of cork may dictate plain steel selection? Notice the spacer Demetrios linked removes unwanted space and moves basket inward if I am interpreting that correctly same as thicker plain steel?

I think 3 is the maximum you can fit into a 7 spring, and 4 in the Cosa - due to the more compact spring design no doubt.

nope - you can get 4 plates in a none cosa and 5 plates in a standard. unsure if this is teh case with CR80, but i do have the conversion clutch plates in a couple of mine..... steels are incrediby thin though and the cork plates deform on the edges very quickly - lovely clutch though and possible with a more plate setup to use softer springs. as there is a greater friction area on the corks

Ah yes I've seen those plates, with a strong light you can read a book through them.
Of course one of the important things about the Honda plates is they are quite thick on the part that hits the basket, increasing the contact area and stopping them from deforming. Quite the opposite of the thin plates. But if you're gentle on the clutch no doubt they work very well.

Hi. Was hoping you guys could help me out.
I've been using the CR80 plates in my 7 spring LML clutch for around a year without much issue however I've recently started to developed problems.
The clutch at the moment is super grabby and makes a horrible noise at the bite point as it jumps forward. Id recently swapped out the basket for a DDOG CNC basket as the slots in my sip banded one opened up super quickly and I put in a new gear cog plate too.
One thing I found odd is that the DDOG basket comes without the hole in which I thought was needed to let oil in.
I've had the clutch out since (looks perfect) and removed the bgm spacer plate I've been using which is mentioned earlier in the thread. This seems to have made it worse and I'm wondering if perhaps it needs spacing further but that seems OTT

Any ideas!? Cheers

It's been a while, has anybody done one of these lately? And how is yours working after a couple of years? The Cosa conversion in my AllState still works like butter! Clap emoticon

I'm thinking about getting after my P200 engined Sprint with this bc it has developed a scary grabby clutch...

Starting to find the limit with these CR80 plates. My 221 clutch has started slipping. Running on 10 XXL springs. Still ok to ride for now but if I open up to much it slips.
These plates were new earlier this year. Maybe 1500 miles. I am hoping this is why SIP made their own version of the CR80 plates and these last a while longer.

Did you get these SIP plates w/ a lot more contact area and if so, how are they holding up?

The sip plates last the longest. They have a carbon version of their cr80 plates too. Tried both. No difference.
I still use the exact same mmw basket now. Change the sip cr80 plates every year (Use the old ones in other scooters), 10 XXXL springs, BGM steels (tightest fit on the splines).
Rebuilt clutch holds the 44 bhp at bay for a season. Just done last month. Would never run OEM style plates in anything.

I'm getting ready to do the clutch in my stock Rally and was thinking of going with the SIP COSA 2 Race Ultrastrong with CR80 plates.

https://www.sip-scootershop.com/en/product/clutch-sip-cosa-2-race-ultrastrong-23-teeth-primary-65-teeth_93405300?q=clutch%20SIP

Overkill for the power, but not for the rides I do.

Any words of warning or other things to consider would be welcome.

I've had that in my cart for months!
Super overkill on a stock VBC, but with arthritis the Cosa is so much better.

I'm thinking lighter springs, maybe switch out every other.

Just not sure yet if these will fit yet:

All the vintage vespas are wet clutch. I run Motul TransOil, but here is more info on the options:

I only know that bikes with wet clutches need a difference oil with no friction modifiers, rated MA.

How about VMC 10 Molle clutch?
Seems like a very good clutch.

For CR80 plates you need 10W40 JASO MA2. Elf, for example. Or Motul Trans Oil 10W40

Make sure symptoms like a grabby clutch and noises at the bite point aren't indicative of a worn out primary gear. When the springs in the primary (xmas tree) start breaking, the gear will make noises and cause the scooter to lurch forward when accelerating from a standstill; likewise when going down the gears.

Just wondering if you needed to grind the tabs on the banded clutch basket?
I have a standard cosa clutch basket with a SIP strengthening ring welded on but the CR80 tabs touch the ring.
Im a bit worried that I grind too much of the tabs to make them fit…,

I had to grind the tabs too on my SIP banded COSA2. Opening it up today so I'll have a look at wear marks if any. I also have a big clunk when shifting from N to 1st gear sat at lights. It's as if the clutch isn't separating fully but it shifts pretty good when riding. How would i increase the plate separation? Picture is the original COSA plates supplied with the clutch. Changed em out for CR80's.Thanks

If the clutch is just dragging a little, you probably just need to back out the clutch fine adjuster a turn or two.
