Registration is now open at http://scootercannonballrun.com/

Morro Bay California to Richmond Virginia May 26-June 4.

Only real change to what scooters qualify this year is that ccs have been raised to 278 so many of the "300" scooters can now be ridden. So if you excuse was you have a GTS 300 that excuse is now gone.

According to the calculator on the forum, the Vespa GTS is 279ccs. 75mm x 63mm is the bore and stroke. And the Honda Forza is also 279ccs. Interesting

It's about time they let the GTS 300's in.

Definitely interesting because Vespa says it is 278. Guess we need to raise the difference up in cannonball forum.

Then, the limit should be 278.34 cc

The intent, I believe, was to allow the GTS300.

Correct, the GTS300 and there are a few others that may sneak in as well. The wording on the website was changed to "less than 279cc" to address rounding.

2008 was the sorta debut year for the GTS250 in the Cannonball. 10 years later it has still not won! Maybe by 2028 a GTS250/300 will end with max points!

So far 16 registered riders!

It looks more like the idea is to keep other 300cc scooters out. The Honda Forza misses the cutoff by one cc.

Sym Citicom 300 would fit. But I'd support 280 cutoff since as you say their calculator puts GTS over 278.

Stupid newb question -- and point me elsewhere if it's been covered ad nauseam: how much do y'all budget for one of these, by the time you throw in shipping, flying home etc.

Actually, not theoretically.

It really depends on how you get to and from the start, whether you self support, join in with others to share a support vehicle and driver. Whether you share a hotel room or ?

Might want to peruse the FAQ at http://www.scootercannonballrun.com/faqs/ which will give you a range of expenses. Figure at a minimum 14 nights hotel plus transport to from whethr your ride or share a trailer (often cheapest if you join a team). Also since it ends in Virginia 2 days before the start of Amerivespa whether or not you'd want to stick around for that but it ain't cheap. Also figure that you'll probably need to change at least the rear tire, possibly belt/rollers (if you are trailering to and from you might get away with starting with a new one and changing after you get home depending on what you are riding). Tools to change things if you don't have them already. I typically take a mounted spare for at least the rear since I'd rather spend the $$ for a spare scooter rim than have to mount a tire in a parking lot.

Not including your scooter the sum is in the thousands not hundred.

Perfect, thanks Cheryl. The FAQ put the costs right where I'd expected.

My first goal with both cannonballs is to finish with me and the scooter in good working order. It is an interesting experience no matter what your goal is when you start out. Often it changes during the course of the ride.

The good thing abour riding a GT 200 is that you don't need to budget much for parts. There will be a dark blue, NOT Black, GT200 that you can remove all the parts from you need.

I believe that might be Vanessa you are referring to. I may have to keep her in my room, out of sight of the Cannonball bandits.

As for the cost, I honestly have never come close to trying to keep track, or add up the bills. Honestly, I don't care. It is the most fun that I have. Worth every penny.

Racing is legal on tracks and with correct permits but not cannonball races through multiple jurisdictions.

Riding cross country is also my one and only bucket list item, and doing it with a crew of like-minded scooter freaks would be insanely cool.

Last night my personal accountant okayed the expense, with the caveat that I agree not to die. Seems fair and easy enough.

Honestly, the ride itself sounds like an utter blast, especially this route, but the logistics at this point feel overwhelming, but I know that's just laziness, and in the last 12 hours I've realized it's all very doable and might be fun to plan.

95% of my brain still says this is utter insanity, and it's been a long time since I gave that other 5% free rein.

I would definitely need to be part of a team, tho.

If tradition continues, 2020 will be East to West. The route is different, and the dates change.

Do you still have a Vespa in Seattle? There's a guy on the ADV Battle Scooter forum who's pretty sure he's in, and/but he's thinking of riding down the coast to catch the beginning (on an HD200, I think).

Seems to me you'd mentioned riding down the coast at some point....

Seems to me you'd mentioned riding down the coast at some point....
Vanessa remains in Seattle, where I left her with a friend after the 2016 SCR.

I wanted to fly out to ride her around the area last summer but work got in the way.

My intention now is to fly to Seattle in late March to ride her to San Francisco, (I know...cold) hopefully visiting with some friends in the area. Then ride to the start of the California Coastal Cannonball. I know of at least one friend riding. (Penni).

Leave it with Classic Rider (John) near the finish for six weeks until the start of SCR 2018.

It involves flying twice to the west coast, but should be perfect for me.

Because I am leaving early, I don't think I could ride down with anyone.

I would love to do this, but budgetary limitations and my continued employment are big hurdles for me.

I've already committed to AmeriVespa next year, so hopefully I'll get to meet some of the participants.

Alrighty, for reasons I do not understand but fully expect to regret mid-Oklahoma, I'm signed up.

Much thanks to Cheryl, Motovista and Bill for the background encouragement.
