Heh, just floated the idea of leaving it out there and buying something else for the interim and...uh...well, that did not go over very well! But I appreciate the sentiment. Laughing emoticon

The most brutally, fiscally rational solution is probably to simply sell it at Amerivespa for short change -- she'll have nearly 30k by the time I get out there and so really isn't worth much in terms of raw value. Pick up $800-1000 selling her, save $700 not shipping her, and buy another out here with fewer miles for $2000...but...

...but...but this lil machine has been damn good to me, and as utterly, absolutely absurd as it sounds (and is) that just seems like stone cold bad karma. And, hell, if I was rational I sure wouldn't be riding a Vespa across the country in the first place, now would I?

Anyway, when I committed I told myself this would be a ridiculously expensive, utterly ridiculous adventure and to not sweat the hidden costs, so in for a penny, in for a pound.

An hour ago. My lil buddy:

Anyone who takes these beautiful photos of their scooter has a bond that is hard to break.

30,000 miles is nothing for a well maintained GT, so it will be good for many more years.

Because I still had two GTs at home, leaving Vanessa in Seattle was an easy decision.

Since this is your only scooter, and buying another is not in the cards, I now suggest that you spend the bucks and ship it home.

Funny, I was thinking the same thing.

But that would make 4 GTs.

I am actually considering selling Razzo when I get home....if Vanessa makes it the entire way.

Free storage if you get it to Wisconsin!

Not such a great dilemma. If it was irreplaceable, it might be easier. OTOH, the bond between a man and his scooter-priceless. She seems like a keeper to me.

Hopefully something better still pops up for you.

I was due to put my ore in this year but sadly illness got in the way.

Then I was planning to meet you all in Trinidad but my friends in Denver were away.

I was then planning to meet you all at the end with Sticky but a family visit took that chance away so sadly I'm going to have to cheer you all on from here.

Had I entered I may have had to pull out because the chemo makes my eyes as dry as a desert so without constant lubrication they are as sore as hell by mid aft.

I probably could have lived with with for a day or so but I'm not sure they would have lasted for 10.

Bugger it.

From a Pizza Delivery standpoint, there might be great changes a-brewing. Empirically, it will seem like nothing has changed. But you might not see what you were expecting.

Sometimes strange things happen just when they are supposed to. And at other times, people see meaning in totally random events. We're about to find out what this was.

I am flying out early Thursday morning to Seattle to pick up the scooter I left there after the 2016 run. She is Vanessa, a 2007 Vespa GT.

I have a week to ride down to Morro Bay with the American "Bobo".

Hopefully meet up with tdrake along the way.

We have a route and some stops planned along the way.

Then the run to Virginia Beach and home.

It should total around 6000 miles, more than I have ever attempted in one ride.

I get started with some trepidation, not knowing how Vanessa is now and how she will hold up for the ride. Also a little concerned about how I will hold up, as I am now 62 and these SCR days are longer and more challenging than either of the other two, 2014 and 2016, I have run.

But it will be very natural for me once I get settled on Vanessa in Seattle.

Looking forward to getting on that jet plane.

I hope everyone will follow here and on the official tracking site.

https://follow.scootercannonballrun.com/

feb31st has been getting this site to a perfect state with statististics and tracking working brilliantly.

I will be posting on my blog, Rocket & Me like I did the last two. A few people followed it over the years, but it gets more popular around Cannonball week. It can be found here:

Bill. I'm riding down to Morro Bay from Santa Cruz on Th, stay on Fri night, participate in the day-before festivities, meet some fellow MV'ers, watch the take off and then head home, maybe by way of some camping depending on the weather. If you decide to come through Santa Cruz and down highway 1, let me know and I'll go south with you and Bobo. You can't go the whole way on highway 1 because the road is still closed at Gorda. You have to cut over to 101 at some point which makes the trip longer because you have to cross the mountains which adds extra miles. Given your long trip, you may just want to bolt down Highway 101 instead but if you want a more leisurely and scenic route, let me know. I'd love to go south with you both.

Cheers. Miguel

Valves, transmission, oil change the works! So the GT200 will be scooter cannonball ready!! Thanks VESPASO from scooter cannonball Rider #89 gopam

Put at least a couple hundred miles on it after you get it back from service and before the Cannonball. Many a long trip has been ruined by someone taking the bike right out of the service department and heading on down the road.

The scooter hasn't been sitting/stored in a garage. It has been being ridden. Are you saying issues from stored scooters that are then serviced? Or are you saying a service mistake? VESPASO has never let me down. But I'll most likely ride it awhile anyhow before Cannonball.

BTW, I still have a reservation for the Desert Rose in Burr in anyone still needs or wants it. Will cancel when I get back to the US on Saturday I just don't see how I can make it to meet up with y'all there. Still hoping to make it for one night anyway.

Hmm looks like I won't be cancelling until next Thursday since there appears a slight chance I could still make it there on time. Probably not but I think I'm going to try.

The scooter hasn't been sitting/stored in a garage. It has been being ridden. Are you saying issues from stored scooters that are then serviced? Or are you saying a service mistake? VESPASO has never let me down. But I'll most likely ride it awhile anyhow before Cannonball.
No, pretty much any time you get a bike out of service, you should ride it a bit before taking off on a long ride, just to make sure everything's right.

Put at least a couple hundred miles on it after you get it back from service and before the Cannonball. Many a long trip has been ruined by someone taking the bike right out of the service department and heading on down the road.
What about all that service you do DURING the Cannonball?
That's fine tuning. If you rely on someone else to do your service, you don't want to take it out of the shop and put it on a four thousand mile journey without making sure everything's right.

I have decided to forgo participation in this year's Scooter Cannonball to start a new coast to coast pizza delivery service.
Back in the 1950's, in Napoli, they didn't need a box to carry the damn pizza, your average pizza fattorino (deliveryman) was a lot more corragioso -
